Kittens, then Kittens II, and so on. I'm currently on Kittens XIII
It must be really interesting to play games with you LOL :D

I just use alias's that I use on a constant basis.. regardless of gender.

If you see a snowfox in your game.. It could quite possibly be me!

Eh, sometimes I'll just use my actual name. Or something completely off the wall like..... Rockstar Hat or something, it really just depends on my mood. My main ME char's first name is German, as in German Shepard. I thought it was funny.

In anything online, I am always Twcblaze, just because the internet offers anonymity doesn't mean I have to accept it.

In offline games, I generally go with Ferris (as in Ferris Bueler) for male characters, and I typically don't play female characters, but when I do, I always name them Etna, because I'm a Disgaea nutjob.

addendum: actually, in Mass Effect, I broke the rule and went with my real first name; because Commander Jaymes Shepard just sounds awesome!

For humans (which is what I almost always play as) I find a medieval name generator online and keep having it give me names until I have about a page of them, then mix and match to my taste. I found an Elvish name generator too.

Something with a double rhyme. Like the song woolybully. It's unisex and catchy.

I open up a book at a random page and choose the first non-main character name I see as the character's name. Or at least, I keep searching until I find a name that fits the gender.

My male characters seem to have three names that pop-up a lot. Svard and Kite for more 'fantasy' games, while Jared for games set more in 'our' world.

I usually name my female characters Naminé, since I loved it from Kingdom Hearts. And also it ends on the same letter as my name.

I don't normally play a male character, but they would probably be named from someone from a movie or game.

I have four, which are almost always used if I haven't done so before on whatever game I'm playing.
Good male: Yrcanos
Evil male: Davros
Good female: Romana
Evil female: Rani

I named my first Mass effect character General Shepard, then when I realized i did not want to be a vanguard, I made another character and named him Eyepatch Shepard after a thread I saw here a little while ago

I typically only name characters when writing short stories. I generally start out by coming up with characters and then finding names to fit them.

The story is usually written after I make a full character description, which can be up to 3 sheets of paper per character (yeah, I like making absolutely sure what they look like), and is usually a way to show how the characters respond to the other characters and the environment. I suppose you'd call it a character study.
