I've recently decided to name some characters "Jonathan Normalface". What possessed me to do that, I have no clue.

Assuming I don't hurl together syllables until something decent is made, I usually give a really old sounding name like phylaiactus or rainsford. Making my character into slightly distorted historical figures (not once in 4 attempts have I been able to make blue-haired hitler) and acting as I think they would is also fun.

Fishman. Every Time.

Unless I'm on a Zelda game and call myself fagballs to honour Mr. Yahtzee ;)

Reading that whilst looking at your avatar was very humourous for me. I'm not sure why.
I can see why that would have that effect. In fact, it amused me so much, I had to screengrab it. Anyway, as for naming convention, it just depends what comes to mind. For example, I named my first Dragon Age character after my Warlocks succubus in WoW. My Elf Rogue was named after a boss from Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Saturn.

Other times I may name my character after people I (used to know), like my long serving Commander (Laura) Shepard. Or alternatively, Adrian Shepard, for a kind of obscure gaming reference.

Also, for no real reason other than perhaps because I'd eaten some the day before, I named the dog in Fable 2 Tempura.

Whatever class type they are. Most of my oblivion characters are named things like "Warlock" and "Paladin", but that's mostly to help me remember what character they are. Other then that I have no real pattern.

I started a game of Final Fantasy VIII with my girlfriend. We used names like "SNAAAAAAKE!" and "Hitler" to see how the dialogue would work out. Results were pleasing, but I hate FFVIII so I stopped rather quickly and moved onto the greatest game I could find: Hello Kitty Roller Rescue.
I usually just whack open a baby names website, type in something and pick a nice name. I used to just pick whatever came into my head but the other method leads to some cooler names than "Lucas" and "Gary." Sometimes it's after people (my Shepard is named after Nathan Fillion), sometimes it's just random. I don't know.

Edit: Of note is my Fallout character: Sakuya, modelled after a certain maid who channels the spirit of a certain vampire. [http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Sakuya_Izayoi]

surviving an ambush from regulators or talon company soldiers just seems all the more brilliant when you find a name like one of those in their bounty note.
