It an ok show but they drag things out too much too many fillers. and such it could be better.

maybe 1 out of every 100 is worth watching. while i read the synopsis for the episode to see if its part 55 of the 100 episode fight where naruto/sasuke/(insert char here) continually gets sabbed and beaten up but with no real development

I assume you like the Japanese version or the manga, but lets move on, shall we?

Well, this post is gonna be a long one *stretches arms and yawns* so hopefully anyone reading this is prepared for a long read, along with a nice cup of tea. And don't worry, the argument I state will be an educated one, not the generic - HE'S A NINJA AND HE WEARS ORANGE!-

Firstly, I read the manga. It was decent. The plot was cliche, the background was cliche, but the characters were colourful (literally) and I found it an enjoyable experience. Of course eventually I heard that Naruto was going to become an anime, when I did I had no expectations, I already knew what was going to become of Naruto.

My assumption was that it was going to be basterdized, retarded, and overrated. And of course, it appears I was right. Now, I'll go off topic and talk about anime in general. I my self am not exactly an anime fan boy, but I do have a fine respect for it. I can watch an anime *an intelligent one anyway.* just as easily as I can watch an American show.

Of course though, the difference between anime and American Sitcom *Lets say, south park or Simpsons* you have to actually be dedicated to it, which poses quite a few problems. Allow me to explain.

The Simpsons, if you miss an episode you don't need to worry, the show doesn't really follow an overall plot and a story is never developed nor progress. An anime however you have to pay a lot of money. For a manga alone you're looking at 12 - 50 dollars per volume, and then the shows...which are often times butchered by American translators/broadcasters, whoever the hell is in charge of the port. And that's not even mentioning the fact that if you miss a single episode for most animes you're fucked.

It seems like whatever becomes mainstream has to be retarded. It seems, whatever America gets their hands on it has to be dumbed down to the point it insults your intelligence, Naruto became incredibly offensive. Hence finally commences my thoughts on Naruto.

As I said, my expectations were incredibly low, the bar was set low, they didn't really have to work to hard to surprise me. Surprisingly though, they did surprise me, they actually managed to make the anime worse then I assumed. (Sick of my redudant use of 'surprise?' Well too bad, I had to deal with this horrifying show.

The Japanese show, the manga, I can understand how people could enjoy it, but the American show, is for those absolutely devoid of taste. For one, I'd prefer having to shove a fork in my ear then listen to Naruto's annoying voice. Second, the last thing the show needed was a god damn catch phrase.

Yeah, catch phrases CAN be good. The Simpsons definitely did it well, but you know why? Because It's a f*cking comedy! And best of all they didn't hammer the catch phrases in your head, they at least had some reason or logic.

'BELIEVE IT!' Shut the F*ck up, Naruto. Believe what? Is there even a point for this catch phrase? No, it's retarded, and he never ONCE said this in the manga. The language in the manga was also dropped down because America is retarded and if anything has a bit of language they panic (Even though, 70% of what a kid may say will end up to be swear words they don't even understand)

And also, Naruto the anime was dumbed down mainly for younger audiences, who have absolutely little to no respect for anime. Pronouncing the names incorrectly, spelling the names incorrectly...it was butchered.

This I assume is why most people hate Naruto. They picture not the Japanese version or the manga, (Which, are both overrated but at least they have redeemable features which I can understand makes the series popular) instead they picture the horrible American version.

Oh, and final...a ninja yelling out their attack 'NARUTARD - JUTSU' Defeats the purpose of being a ninja, now doesn't it? The morale of the story is to appeal to the masses you need to make something retarded, something that requires little to no thought, that way everyone will like it.

I tried to get into Naruto, I really did. I made it upto 40 episodes when I couldnt take anymore of those fucking fillers.
Actually I've just noticed I've been ninja'd here, but really it can't be understated how much this comment says "I know Naruto has filler so I'm just going to hate on it for that."

I think iShadow really hit the nail on the head with respects to the English translation. Naruto itself isn't all bad. It's not the best and has some ridiculous parts. Plus the bits that actually *are* filler are generally awful. However it makes oddly compelling watching (or reading), and is about ten times better now all the characters have grown up and become a little more real.

What usually works for me is read the manga on the internet (which is free and doesn't waste alot of time) and if there is a particularly good chapter or fight i'll watch the episode. This works for the only 2 animes I watch, which is bleach and naruto. Also the manga doesn't have any filler arcs =)

I actually liked Naruto in the beginning, but then I began to hate it.

Here's why.

They are ninjas. At the beginning, the gening-teams are loud children pretty much 'playing' ninjas, while their Jounin teachers are the experts and way, way beyond the gening teams. And this is quite understandable if somewhat cliche and sets the stage in an excellent manner while giving us some character development. Potential for greatness is there for all to see.

Then the Wave arc begins. And we see out first battle between two expert ninja: Copy-Nin and the Demon of the Mist. And it is a battle of misdirection, traps within traps and higher level tactics, with weapons and jutsus somewhat taking the back-stage to planning, prediction and execution. And I'm cackling in glee, as the Determinator aka Naruto manages to free their sensei by the virtue of being utterly underestimated in tactical capacity. Slightly made possible only due Naruto having that mysterious 'Protagonist!' sign above his head, but still somewhat believable within the context.

But after the Wave-arc, it all changes. Battles are no longer about tactics and deception, but rather of either overwhelming speed coupled with Dragonball-esque powerup-level-races *coughMightyGuyAndRockLeecough* or just 'whos got the flashiest jutsu' competitions, riddled with oh-so-typical speeches and combatants exchanging life-stories. Simultaneously, all character development with Naruto stopped (yay, lets stay a childish Determinator forever, it has worked so well for all my life. But hey, lets add obsession over an ex-friend who by the words of my sensei is worse than trash), Sasuke switched states permanently to a mind-controlled whiny man-***** with no hope of being interesting ever again, only Sakura showed any signs of possibly being something interesting in the future while Kakashi was downgraded from an aloof and mysterious but highly competent teacher, to a boring repetitive broken down shell of a man with mental issues.

That coupled with the fillers made me hate the anime. I had read the manga and found it to be more enjoyable and decided to continue on with just that, to see if it was any better. And it was, if only slightly. And then Shippuuden began and even the manga went down the toilet.

{Warning - Long Post is Long]

This may come across as a little pedantic, but the reason they stuck "believe it" after most of Naruto's sentences was because in the Japanese version he sticks -ttebayo on the end of his sentences (I believe that particular ending is designed to make his character appear more tough or something.) Since in English -ttebayo would make absolutely no sense, and they had to stick something on the end of it and they went with "Believe it". While maybe not the best choice, I can see why it was done.

On to Naruto itself. I am one of those tragic cases who has read every manga chapter and goes back to the anime to watch fights that should hopefully be interesting. I enjoy it, most of the time the story arcs are interesting, the characters are entertaining and some of the fight scenes are good fun to watch.

However that's not to say it's without it's problems. For me, there are two main issues with the series. The first is the main character himself. In the first series he was loud, obnoxious but usually never enough to be irritating. We had his whole "determination to be Hokage thing" and we could respect him for it. The kid had a dream to be recognised. Flash forward to the second series and his obsession with Sasuke has taken precedence over all else. Get over it. Next point, the fight scenes. In the first series the fight scenes were often very well done, I still cite the Gaara v.s. Rock Lee as one of my favourite fights of the whole series. However, in the second series I have found very few battles that caught my interest. Why? Simple. Whereas in the first series we would often see a mixture of hand to hand combat and the "ninjutsu" used in the series, now we essentially have stacking bigger jutsu against each other and seeing which comes out on top ala DragonBall Z. This for me is an incredibly dull way of resolving fight scenes. Also, what the hell happened to the hand seals? They never use them any more. Also, a friend of mine raised this point, but the fights look better in the opening animation than they do in the actual series.

While Naruto remains popular there will always be those who dislike it, either for their own reasons, to be an "anime snob" or simply disliking anime in general. And of course, when a Japanese anime gets popular, there will be American dubs. Yes I have heard it and yes it is terrible. But that should be no reason to detract from the show itself. Watch it in Japanese with subtitles! Or read the manga. Also, bad dubs should never stop you from watching dubbed anime a very good example of English dubbing is Full Metal Panic, I much prefer watching it in English to Japanese!
