Wow the future is here.

Milo = Haley Joel Osment in A.I.?
I was thinking that. It would have been great if Molyneux had shut up and didn't parrot everything that happened. Yes Peter, we do have eyes. We can recognise simple motions.

I don't think it'll replace controllers - its just a new type of game - we'll probably see a number of downloadable games for it, whilst keeping the current controller.
Exactly what I was going to say. If it's all the same to Microsoft, I'll stick with the control scheme I've been using for the last 14 years, thanks.

Sounds good, but imo, could easily fail. I'm guessing the technology will cost quite a fair bit, which will definately put me off getting one for a while. I'd like to have seen some proper games demoed on the Natal rather than painting, Milo and that Richochet thing. Otherwise, I'm impressed, just wondering whether Sony and Nintendo can do any better.

Yeah, this is the same stuff I remember playing with in science museums 20 years ago. It's not really that exciting. We'll see if there's any good games for it.
you played with a true interactive AI at a science museum? was it cosi? cus I missed that exhibit. last time I checked the prospect of a consumer device that could recognize and reflect intelligent AND emotional stimuli was a huge breakthru.

either Molyneux knows how to put together one hell of a fake tech demo, or the robot apocalypse is about to take off

EDIT: forgot to mention I agree with most of the people here, they will never completely phase out controllers (not any time soon at least) but this does have huge potential to change the nature of interactive entertainment. i for one and excited at the prospect of more games that involve less shooting and dodging

Its just a casualgamer-trap.
But as we all know, virtual reality should be the ultimate goal of games, and things like natal and the wii are bringing us closer to i...

I imagined a full console-based MMO with this thing. It would literally be a virtual reality world. Creepy, huh?
Still, the Natal itself looks cool.

My question is how "interactive" will it actually be? Surely in this day and age there's a limit on programability. You'd need to digitally create a human brain to create a seamless interaction. We don't even entirely understand the human brain. It'd take years, if not decades to create a character that responds in unique ways every time. It strikes me as kind of like Wolfram Alpha at the moment - it'd be quite easy to trip it up.

Having said that, they're probably not trying for that yet, are they? They're just trying to make games more interactive, not entirely interactive. I'm probably just thinking way too far ahead.

However, we'll see how it eventually turns out, even if it takes years to try to perfect.

Like anything Microsoft releases, I think I'll wait a couple of years before buying. Then if it bombs, it won't even matter.

Dude, I hate the name for it!!! Natal is Christmas in Portuguese, so for me... this is Xbox Christmas. WTF!

Oh, but it does look really cool. But If I get this thing for Christmas... kill me.

I am quite impressed with the Natal project thing, however I am just as skeptical as to how effective it will actually work. The games they showed us still involve flailing your arms everywhere no matter how they say it, and if the Wii has taught us anything even the shiniest of motion controls can still fall flat with unresponsivness of the entire thing.

I'm waiting untill we see some more footage with the thing in action, I've seen too little to make a full opinion on it.

However, Milo, the kid thing, that was stunning to me. Though, again, it falls into the whole "Eye Pet" thing that Sony showed a few months back. So, who knows what'll happen. Somehow I doubt that it will really be as huge of a success as we think it could be.

This could be awesome or another eyetoy and to be honest I'd love to play a shooter on this. Imagine online diving behind the coffee table for cover.

In all honesty this is going to fail or be the control interface for Xbox 3.
was about to add that but thanks anyway Madden on Natal perfect for Superstar Mode[/quote]

I thought the same thing at first, but then I realized that there is no way for the camera to capture all of the room, so a full range of motion is out of the question. Also, there would be no way to really move the character within the game. Yes, it would read you stepping forward, but once you get right up to the television, how do you continue forward? You would need a controller to have a full range of movement, and then with that, what's the point of recording body control?

I say this isn't as much of a breakthrough as they want it to be.

I don't get it! Are they trying to completely eliminate controllers?! I hope not, because all that ice picker climbing in Modern Warfare 2 looks like hard work.

Dear Microsoft, please stop trying to be Nintendo. You have your thing, they have theirs. Just let it be.

It's just too much. Im sure most of the ppl that have a 360 would simply prefer a controller with buttons. Its a gimmick. And Milo is a bit creepy to be honest. Real friends are better then milo. Although for the sims this would be EPIC lol. nonetheless i think Microsoft should be focusing using this tech to make untouchable mind blowing AI in just...games.
BTW i love how they keep talkign about This barrier that seperates you and your friends without natal and xbl from sharing moveis music and games. Hmm how about GO OUT TO THE MOVIES WITH YORU FRIENDS, GET OFF THE COUCH AND INVITE SOMEONE OVER FOR PETES SAKE.

Microsoft has a pretty neat video of Natal, a different one than what is linked here, available for download over Live. The concept looks interesting, but the motion detection looks clunky, especially on the racing game.

Because Nintendo is making a mountain of cash and Microsoft wants in.
