Ok, here's is why I'm asking you about this:
Recently, an Iranian friend of mine was bragging about the glorious past of his people's civilization: first people in history who made an empire, first bill of human rights (see: Darius' Cylinder), their advances in science, contributions to art and poetry, and all the usual list of great people (Darius, Zoroaster; I forgot the rest).

I told him that I find that stupid. Every civilization has a history that can rival that. Every ancient civilization has had its contributions to the sciences, art, literature, and its list of great people. Whenever people, including my fellow Americans, show their hard-on for their country, they conveniently a) forget the achievements of other countries, and b) have no recollection of the shit their countries/civilizations pulled. Going back to the Persian Empire, Zoroastrianism put in place a caste system so oppressive and vicious that traveled to India, where it still reigns supreme.

Americans, for example, are always going on about their constitution but not mentioning that most of the laws were, in form or the other, practiced in GB, and the fact that our Constitution is a near exact blueprint of Montesquieu's Spirit of Laws.

I'm an anationalist. I don't believe in the inherent superiority of any one country over the other. Everyone has their moment in history. Iranians had theirs, but so did the Babylonians, the Phoenicians, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, The Germans, the French, the English, the Russians, and now, us Americans--and even as we speak, our glory fades away into the annals of history books.

Too long, did not read?

Question: What is your opinion of nationalism, and how do you deal with people who shove it in your face?

I am a Canadian patriot but that doesn't mean I think every other nation's accomplishments are much less important. I think nationalism is important but it needs to be tempered with an understanding that your nation can never be the best at everything forever.

Nationalism to me is all fine and good in a mild sense. I personally love my country enough to the point of joining the Armed Forces after college. The problem comes in when people start thinking that their country is so much better than all the others that they are the only civilized people on the planet.

Nationalism is dumb, especially in 'Merica. I've been a U.S. citizen my entire life, and I can't stand people who act as if they are inherently superior because they're American. Yeah, 'Merica's done some good stuff, but we've done some pretty stupid/bad things too. Goes for any other country I guess.

I believe people have a right to feel proud of their nation. Whether someone else feels the same way is their opinion.

People attack every nationionality and I find THAT to be stupid. You know what, we're all people and we're all of the human race, and if you want to take pride in your nation, good for you, but don't go saying your better than anyone else, we're all the same essentially

We don't deal with that shit here in Aus. None of us actually give a fuck.

"Our county's better? Ok, mate, whatever."

I don't see the difference in saying "my nation's scientific achievements are superior to yours" and "My dad can beat your dead up".

To me, my nation or my culture is something that I just happen to be a part of, and something I probably didn't contribute much to.

I like to take their nationalism, and force feed it to them with the nearest blunt object. Then again, people like that bring out my violent tendencies.

Nationalism is part of (general) human nature. At the core of most people, as shown in history and just by the interactions with our peers, it is obvious that there is a tendency to display selfish hyperbole about an association with a powerful/important entity. That being said, in my opinion it's a waste of time because it will just end up creating arguments and more chaos. Then again, is chaos so bad? I don't know.

As for dealing with these nationalistic people, I just laugh and tell them to chill. Occasionally, if I don't particularly like the person, I'll tell them their opinion is bullshit and they're wrong just for more laughs :D
