Okay this dilemma is not an original one and we all here have been in this position many times before.

But basically, i've got a job where after bills and such I have approx £400 a month left to myself, I want to put some money aside and wish to upgrade my computer.

The total build cost is approx £900, i'm wanting an ATi 5970 2GB, Intel i7 930, 6GB DDR3, new mobo to take i7

However, the problem is I know i should put my money to other uses such as driving lessons, i mean £900 is almost enough to pay for 40 lessons at £24 an hour and practical and theory

I'm not sure what to do. I know I could save up a few months and get both but i'm not sure. Furthermore to complicate things, i don't game as much as I used to, so to use the argument, a computer of that spec would last 3 years, possibly slightly longer doesn't apply as i'm not sure if i would be getting my moneys worth

What do you all think? Driving Lessons or upgrade my rig? Or neither, spend it on something else entirely(my dad thinks I should save it but I am terrible saving money)

hOw about you put aside for a little bit of both. Bettering yourself with driving lessons and such means you might be able to get a better job and more opportunities in the future and you'll also be getting that sweet pc despite the added wait.

I'd say upgrade your rig.

Screw driving lessons, my parents can help pay for them with christmas money.

And I won't have a car for years anyway...

Diving lessons. No doubt about it. Because it will give you more chances of getting a job and the propaganda goes that it is handy in your spare time too. You can always spend your money on a computer after that, but for your future, I think it's for the best.

divide what you make into three bits, save one for your computer, the other for driving lessons, and the final just as a personal cache of cash for when an opportunity arises when money is needed.

Thanks, i know its sensible to really go for the driving lessons. but what i'm thinking is try and save until christmas, by which time the price of computer components may go down plus can ask parents for money or driving lessons and the money i've got aside on xmas, split between computer and driving lessons and whats left offer i'll try and keep saved for whatever else :D

Thanks fellow Escapists

Both. But driving lessons first. By the time you've done the lessons you'll WWAAYYY more than enough cash to build an awesome computer.

Depends on what you need most.

If you live in an urban area, I'm sure you can live off public transport/cycling for a while as you save up for your rig... if you genuinely need driving for distance purposes, however, I'd prioritise that first.

Driving lessons are more important.

If you have a license to drive, you can get better-paying jobs, and then you can upgrade your computer every year!

Hooray!
That, and driving lessons will prevent you from accidentally killing yourself.

I hate to be so grim, but lessons are far more important. Split the money 25/75, 75 to lessons, 25 saved up for your rig.
