Ok, the first thing you're going to want to do is walk into a house. If the doorway is blocked, press "s" to crouch and go under people. When you're inside, press "k" and put the cursor over someone, this will allow you to talk to them. Talk to some guy and ask them about whatever you want. "Service" will basically ask for a quest, and permission to stay will allow you to sleep in their house for a night. Anyhow, once you've gotten a quest, leave the talk menu and press Shift-T to go into fast travel. "m" will bring up a world-map type thing, and Shift-Q will bring up your quest log. Bring up the log, and press "z". This will show you where you're supposed to go. From there I think you can probably figure it out. If you get into a fight, Shift-A will allow you to use targeted attacks. If you can't figure something out, press Shift-? and look at the key bindings, that should help.M-E-D The Poet said:I got up to making a world+ character, then I totally lost track besides knowing my character was meant to be the @ patrolling my screenXangi said:But... The instructions will only make it even more complex, meaning he will quickly become either very frustrated and leave, or become desensitized to it and actually have fun! (though maybe not Fun, that depends on how good he is)Tharwen said:You're already swamping him in instructions! For God's sake, leave the man be until he's at least had a chance to discover the mind-crushing obtuseness of the interface for himself!Xangi said:Play adventure mode first if the interface confuses you. Adventure is very simple(compared to fortress), and will let you get used to reading ASCII. Also, I'd recommend getting a tileset from here http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Tileset_repository and installing it. Personally, I use Herrbdog, because I like the smooth shading.Tharwen said:[a href="http://bay12games.com/dwarves/"]Here[/a].M-E-D The Poet said:where do I get this dwarf fortress?Tharwen said:DWARF FORTRESS
Infinite fun! Carp! Elephants! Death by murder! A detailed and semi-realistic retelling of a vast procedurally generated fantasy world inhabited by wonders and excitement beyond your wildest dreams! Magma! More death!
...I like Dwarf Fortress.
I won't blame you if you don't want to try to get into it, but once you get over the 'D = nasty angry dragon' graphics and the hideous interface, it's very deep and enjoyable.
Also, people tend to look at you weirdly when you describe it to them, so that's a plus.
And remember, Losing is Fun!
