DWARF FORTRESS

Infinite fun! Carp! Elephants! Death by murder! A detailed and semi-realistic retelling of a vast procedurally generated fantasy world inhabited by wonders and excitement beyond your wildest dreams! Magma! More death!

...I like Dwarf Fortress.
where do I get this dwarf fortress?
[a href="http://bay12games.com/dwarves/"]Here[/a].

I won't blame you if you don't want to try to get into it, but once you get over the 'D = nasty angry dragon' graphics and the hideous interface, it's very deep and enjoyable.

Also, people tend to look at you weirdly when you describe it to them, so that's a plus.
Play adventure mode first if the interface confuses you. Adventure is very simple(compared to fortress), and will let you get used to reading ASCII. Also, I'd recommend getting a tileset from here http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Tileset_repository and installing it. Personally, I use Herrbdog, because I like the smooth shading.

And remember, Losing is Fun!
You're already swamping him in instructions! For God's sake, leave the man be until he's at least had a chance to discover the mind-crushing obtuseness of the interface for himself!
But... The instructions will only make it even more complex, meaning he will quickly become either very frustrated and leave, or become desensitized to it and actually have fun! (though maybe not Fun, that depends on how good he is)
I got up to making a world+ character, then I totally lost track besides knowing my character was meant to be the @ patrolling my screen
Ok, the first thing you're going to want to do is walk into a house. If the doorway is blocked, press "s" to crouch and go under people. When you're inside, press "k" and put the cursor over someone, this will allow you to talk to them. Talk to some guy and ask them about whatever you want. "Service" will basically ask for a quest, and permission to stay will allow you to sleep in their house for a night. Anyhow, once you've gotten a quest, leave the talk menu and press Shift-T to go into fast travel. "m" will bring up a world-map type thing, and Shift-Q will bring up your quest log. Bring up the log, and press "z". This will show you where you're supposed to go. From there I think you can probably figure it out. If you get into a fight, Shift-A will allow you to use targeted attacks. If you can't figure something out, press Shift-? and look at the key bindings, that should help.

Kingdom of loathing?

Not doppler, Kongregate, and Bubblebox are also really good to murder if you want something in flashgame form.

Instead of posting the motivational poster which follows the caption which I'm going to quote, I'll just post the caption: Cavestory, go play it already.

Well, how good is your laptop? If it's pretty decent under the hood, I would recommend The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. Granted, your quest to kill boredom may become more of an addiction of sorts, but the game is still fun and very moddable in case you want to change things up a bit.

I... don't think I want to marry something sthat sounds like an eldrich horror.

Dwarf Fortress, since it needs no mouse and contains deep pits of burning orange FUN, once you learn how to play it.
Frozen Synapse is in the new Indie Humble Bundle, and it's a brilliant way to waste time with random skirmishes and online challenges.
I have no clue as to RTS games, but as for turn based you can't go wrong with X-Com UFO Defence.

Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1&2, or Arcanum for RPGs. Europa Universalis 3 or Victoria 2 for strategy. You could burn years on Europa Universalis 3 and Victoria 2.

Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, those will run on anything made in the last decade. And I spent a lot of time playing those, so I don't doubt you would have trouble finding at least say... a month in there.

Morrowind runs on my netbook so it should be okay on your laptop.

Also Zork. It's old and it's free and you draw the map yourself.

Atomic ZOmbie smasher. Some indie game on steam and came with the last indie bundle. Very addictive and incredibly easy modding means you can alter it as much as you want.
