For a series with some good characters, I suggest Dies The Fire by SM Stirling. Basically, all technology from gunpowder to nuclear fusion stops working and the world collapses, really memorable characters and world building.
That sounds really interesting, I'll try get a copy of it next time I'm out and about.

Foundation by Issac Asimov is one of my recent favorites (though there is virtually no combat, military or otherwise)
Oh and Ender's Game good, but it is military on almost exclusively the command level

The Gaunt's Ghosts series of Warhammer 40k books. A lot of people read them who don't even play the game or know anything about it.

Plus, it's really, really good.

Anything in the Warhammer universe (40k for space stuff and original for Fantasy) is pretty good. I'm reading the Third Gotrek and Felix omnibus atm.

Hey, I've been playing alot of Mass Effect, Starcraft, UFO: AI and listening to alot of Hawkwind recently however I've been reading books like Nausea, Inferno and In Cold Blood.

The problem is I feel like something a bit more spacey but everything in the bookstore looks like the same generic crap and reading the first few pages doesn't really tell you how good at book is going to be.

So my question is can any of you recomend a good, original, sci-fi novel with good characters?
Sorry, but I cannot really suggest sci-fi books.
All what I can seriously recommend is a fantasy book, which is the best book I have ever read.
It's called the Amulet of Samarkand, first book in the Bartimaeus Trilogy.
If you want a simple explanation about it, let's just say it's like Harry Potter, without wands nor schools, a revenge-political-hierarchy story, and it's details to the world and story are comparable to games like Thief (the main character reminds me of Garrett), the Hunger Games (book series). Check it out now!

Abnett might be one of the best modern Sci-fi authors. His short stories are good too. For the warhammer books after gaunts ghosts get the space wolf omnibus. Its very interesting/cool
