fallout new vegas will give you choices, RPG mechanics, guns, an ok story, and +100 hours of gameplay. this is my highest recomendation of the bunch

fallout 3 is also a great game (predicessor to new vegas) but the morality system is a bit weird and everybody in the game feels like they are either entirely good or entirely bad and there is little middle ground. i think fallout 3 has a better atmosphere than new vegas and a better story but lacks any real depth

Kingdom of amalar is a single player MMO style RPG that has a ton of quests (it took over 200 hours for a speed run through all the quests and the main storyline clocks in at around 20-30 hours) it also has good combat, and the ability to switch all of you skill points at given locations (go from a mage to a warrior), and the game allows you to mix and match classes in any way you like

borderlands is a fun RPG shooter and is similar to diablo in many respects (its all about the loot) but i think the online community (where most of the fun is) has shrunk

fable 1 is a great game (dont get 2 or 3) and is heavily about choice (although they all boild down to good or evil) but has an interesting story if you pick up the expansion

the witcher is great (havent played the witcher 2) and is all about choice with no black and white moral choices, good combat (once you get useto it), and very interesting lore and characters

since you are going to be kooped up for five days i think a game with tons of play time is best and since you have skyrim i think one of the fallout games would be best since they have the same feel to them but with different mechanics

I can't possibly suggest the Fallout series enough. If you aren't into the slower paced old-school adventure RPG, then I'd suggest going straight into Fallout 3 or New Vegas. If you like open world RPGs, then you can't possibly find a better one. Everything about Fallout 3 and New Vegas is better than Skyrim, the character (more like there ARE characters), the presence of an actual story (although Fallout 3 has a better one), combat that doesn't put you to sleep, and combat AI that isn't just "run at the protagonist". The quests are actually dynamic in how you can finish and interact with them and not just "do it or don't do it", and the setting and landscape, while decidedly brown, make you really appreciate finding a settlement when you come across. I can't tell you how relieved you'll feel when you're out of Stimpaks and have two crippled legs, a busted arm, and your guns are all smashed to shit, then you find a blip on your compass that turns our to be a city that can get you patched up and reequipped and ready to face the Wasteland again. Not to mention the settlements always have their own style and flavor. No two look the same. In Skyrim, all the cities just look like any other medieval city you'd see anywhere else.

Persona 3 just came out on the Playstation store for 10 bucks. It's a PS2 port, but it's fantastic (graphics were never its selling point), and it's incredibly original, and it will last you ages, as in one run through the story could easily edge on 100 hours. Give it a look.

As people have said, the Fallouts are worth a look. Both the new ones are great, but the old ones are very much worth a look as well. The older computer RPGs that above people have mentioned are also great and can be found as super cheap downloads online. Planescape is my personal favorite

For more PS3 recommendations, Valkyria Chronicles is fun, it's an RPG/military strategy hybrid. Tales of Graces F just came out, haven't played it yet but the Tales series is usually fun because it has a fast paced fighting game style battle system. Disgaea 4 is fun, but for a newcomer to RPGs, that game would very much be diving right into the deep end.

If your PS3 is one of the old backwards compatible ones, the PS2 had massive amounts of good JRPGS: Final Fantasy X and XII, Dragon Quest 8, Xenosaga, Shin Megami Tensei, Shadow Hearts, Grandia 3, Suikoden, Kingdom Hearts among others I'm sure I'm forgetting. Again, the Playstation store has tons of solid RPGs from the PS1 as well.

If you have a PS3, get on PS Store then buy and download God Hand.

That will keep you occupied, or it will just make you cry and throw controllers.

I strongly suggest you buy Mount and Blade: Warband. It is one of the best modern RPGs on the market today, I've put 125 hours into it myself and I've only ever really had the one save. There's a demo if you don't want to risk it but it's dirt cheap anyway so it's not as if it would burn a hole in your pockets.

Damn it! I knew I forgot to turn the Ninja alarm on!

OP: For good games - Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Dead Space 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Xenoblade: Chronicles, The Last Story (Don't know if your American or not, so ignore those if you can't get 'em) Borderlands and RAGE are all pretty good choices for games.
I'd also Advise the Pokemon: Black/White if you don't already own them, as they are some of the best pokemon games out now. Bonus to it being on the DS means you can watch TV while also playing the game (if so, then I recommend Farscape - the god king of TV shows). If your not sold on the pokemon series then... well, Chrono Trigger is out on the DS too.

And we all know that Chrono Trigger is the best RPG of all time.

Captcha: Make Haste. Yes, make haste to the nearest store to purchase Chrono Trigger! Go! Now!
If straying onto ds territory I'll Throw my hat into the ring with a couple Namely Infinite space(all I use my DS for thse days) and the world ends with you.

In infinite space you are you newbie captain just setting out in space with your first ship controls are incredibly simple and never really gets complicated the whole melee section pretty much comes down to a giant game of rock paper scissors. That said as the story progresses they slip in more and more bits and pieces and you have only so much space to modify you're growing fleet so You will have to make choices like wether you will focus on attack or defence wether you will get the big gun that hits once for 100 per shot(if it hits at all) or 3 times for 50 per shot(again as last time. add that A constantly growing crew that you have to assign to the best posistions to get the most out of example do I want him as my vice captain or radar operator, do I want her as a cook or medic? all little choices which build up to having a huge effect on your play style a normal run through of the game take about 50 hours but to see all story routes and collect all possible ships you will need to play through I believe a minimum of 2 times. There is a new game plus mode but all you keep is your on hand cash and character levels so you cant go throught the entire game with uberbad ship or a full fleet of 5 ships from the word go. that said the cash thing does rather break a major plot point early on which actually becomes a characters motivation for the firs quarter or so of the game but they deal with this by ignoring it and just carrying the plot like the money was never there.

Highly addictive gameplay though heads up warning can be reaaal infuriating early on with much much grinding.

as for the world ends with you well Yahtzee covered that one pretty well real enjoyable jrpg. dual screen can be difficult but if your on normal difficulty you can pretty regularly let the game handle screen 2

Wait... did you seriously just say Fallout 3 has a better story then New vegas?

Well, maybe a little better. Fallout 3 had a deeper story. New Vegas was pretty much all about finding Benny and all the time deciding what you were going to do with him as you went from clue to clue trying to find him, and ultimately deciding his fate. New Vegas did a good job in blending the revenge story into the Civil War story that was kind of the frame of the setting, which you eventually get to decide as well. Fallout 3 stayed very personal. You went from looking for your father in a seemingly endless wasteland, to not only finding him, but discovering that he had lied to you your whole life. You eventually learn about the dream your mother had about bringing the Waters of Life back to the dead wastes, and actually taking up that dream and spearheading the project to bringing it to the end and defying the oppression of the Enclave and their superior technology. Both are very good, and I really liked how the Enclave would set up outposts in areas around the Capital Wasteland that you had previously explored, making even low level areas right outside Megaton dangerous if you were caught with your pants down. Reading their computers would reveal the experiments and what they had learned about the various inhabitants of the Wasteland. Made the world feel VERY dynamic.

All in all, I love just about every Fallout game. I guess I just felt that the story in Fallout 3 was a little more moving. But the story in New Vegas was certainly much BIGGER and dealt with "the big picture" of how the world should be ruled. It was very heavy on your personal choices, where Fallout 3 was more like you were advancing the story of your character.

Skyrim is certainly a good game but what it isn't is a story driven RPG. Pretty much every Bethesda RPG centers more around gameplay than anything else. Sure, it has a plot but it isn't particularly good/interesting.

If you're feeling up to it I would recommend the original Fallout. It's turn based and isometric but it has excellent writing.
If you mant something with an action aspect to it (like Mass Effect) then Fallout: New Vegas is probably more suitable.
If you're after something similar to Mass Effect in style then KOTOR is definetly a good idea as it was made the same company (Bioware) when they sucked less.

Oh pfft. From the title of the thread, I thought you were offering.

I just noticed I ended it with a question mark rather than a period. That's my bad. In my head it sounded like a question.
Just teasing. But if you're really sorry, do check out Knights of the old republic (if you haven't played it)

Best wishes for your speedy recovery.

If you have a pc then I would recommend Mount and Blade: Warband, it's a very fun open world RPG. It's a medieval seting so if you like that then you will probably enjoy this since it has no magic!

I would also recommend Vampire masquerade: Bloodlines. It's a pretty fun rpg however be warned that it is extremely buggy so if you want to play it then you will probably want to download the unoffical community patch. It fixes a lot of bugs and restores cut content.

But Fallout 3's story only happened by raping the lore of the entire series into nothing. Whats the point of having a story if it ignores everything the series is about and had done previously?

the fact that The encalve existed as a powerful faction, that super Mutants ere on the West coast, that Vault-Tek had FEV, that the Brotherhood of Steel were a large group of hippies, fallout 3 is just plain insulting to the name Fallout.

Also one could EASILY say Fallout 3's story was "just about finding your dad" because that's what 80% of the MQ was, but that would be a GROSS oversimplification, saying New vegas was mostly about finding Benny is wrong.

Furthermore with the DLC, which were ALL much better then Fallout 3's, you find out there's a even BIGGER meta-story behind the story of Fallout New Vegas with Ulysses.

Saying New vegas was mostly about finding Benny is wrong.
Of course the Benny plot wasn't the WHOLE main quest line. Like I said, you get into the war between the NCR and the Legion pretty soon after you hit the Strip, probably even before that. Being able to decide who takes over the Mojave was a HUGE deal to me. It felt like a legitimate moral choice. Do you let the NCR take over and rule with an exhausted and stretched, yet effective and passionate military? Do go for the Legion even though they're tyrannical and oppressive, but they obviously have a no nonsense approach when it comes to protecting their own. Even Cass said the Legion-backed Caravans are safer because no one would DARE cross the Bull and expect to stay UN-crucified. I really liked finding allies in the other factions, and even made you really reconsider things like who should lead the Brotherhood and the Khans when you had the power to dictate that. Fallout 3 may not have been as broad and world-changing as the story in New Vegas, but you were really motivated to keep going by how personal of a story it was. Finding your dad, learning you were in fact NOT born in the Vault, watching your father die by the hands of the Enclave, then working to bring life back the Capital Wasteland.

And I don't remember any particular lore incongruities in Fallout 3.

And yes, the DLC for New Vegas were MUCH better. Some of the best for any game in my opinion. They never felt like the "held back" content that was already on the disk or shit like gun skins that a lot of DLC is.
