*****To Skip the details move down to the next asterisks

I've grown incredibly bored over the last month as quite literally every single penny of my funds (aside from vital bills like food etc) has been going towards saving up for covering the costs of my US fiance visa.

Since my kotor2 game only works when the sound is disabled (thus rendering playing the game rather pointless and boring as half the enjoyment is hearing the whoom sounds as you hack and slash your enemies to pieces), I've been trawling through some free to play mmos trying to find something to occupy my time. So far I've gone through four and it took long enough to evaluate them alone (almost a week now...would've been more but that will be explained in a second), so I'm going to ask for some assistance from the community because as a whole you've probably covered all the mmos out there.

The first mmo i turned to was wonderking. A side scrolling mmo which was filled with hacks and security holes during closed beta. So much so that players were standing still on one map and everything around them died instantly after spawning. Apparently they got those holes fixed when open beta hit so i decided to try it again. So i opened up my client, updated it, patched it blah blah...only to have the message that my accoutn was suspended. Confused I logged onto the site only to find that they had IP blocked the whole of europe because of a publisher issue or some sort. Reguardless of reason I was apparently banned (along with the rest of europe) because companies cant play nice.

The next mmo I went after was an usual one, Wizards 101, it was quite an addictive game, combat was turn based and enemies were added for each player that joined your battle (upto 4 on each side). it was all great fun with a semi premium style, purchasing extra items as ou needed. I quite enjoyed it and planned to play it forever...till i found out you need to pay for all the areas outside of the main starter areas (3). So I got to level 10 and was essentially beached on a bank of tiny exp and repeatative killings of the same boring monsters and quest lines that were blocked by pay to play restrictions.

The next one I moved onto was a well known one. Dungeons and Dragons Online. The reasons for me abandoning this one are as follows:

1) No health regen outside of town.
2) potions only cover a tiny fraction of your hp (like 5-9 hp each time and you have 90+ as a lvl 3 rank 12 fighter and it takes a second to use them)
3) no food or drinking outside of taverns to regen health unless you buy special food from the DDO store which costs IRL money.
4) map icons are tiny so its hard to find what you're looking for
5) quest system needs work, completed quests are kept in your main log...which is pointless IMHO. they should be on a different page if they want to keep them.... See more
6) vendors sell sucky gear. Even the 3rd town vendors barely sell any good gear for affordable prices, and even the expensive stuff is pretty shit compared to what early quests give you.
7) The character mechanics are *wwaayyyy* too complex with no tooltips to give you help on understanding how they work. It's in the manual, but its a 90+ page manual.

I could go on but those 7 together added up to me not wanting to play it much anymore. Yes I suck at maths and formulas and not fluent in table top lingo.

The last one I tried was a jrpg mmo "Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine". Not a bad game overall, combat is ok but no keys to auto target that i was told about or could find. Starter spells used up 3/4 of your mana and mana took a *long* time to regen. HP regen wasnt much of an issue as block took every attack down to 1 so you stayed alive pretty well. You could befirend demons but this took forever with some unless they were on a specific quest. I spent an hour trying to befriend one kind of demon only to have the sneaking suspicion in my mind i wouldn't be able to do it till a later level only I hadnt been told by anyone. Attacks were alright but you have to charge up almost all of them which is a bit of a pain especially when your demon decides it doesnt want to obey even though its supposed to by game rules, like when you click on a shop and the npc ignores you because the message doesnt register or something. It used the old method of radar and minimap in different windows and there was no general diraction pointer for where you had to go so if you werent paying 100% attention you sometimes miss where it tells you and have to do guess work. The key bindings were pretty confusing aswell. C was for your inventory (chest apparently) L was supposed to be for your minimap to open up but it didnt work and demon menus were opened with B of all keys. Add to that the fact that you have to level up the expertise of everything which also takes *forever* (0.05 per normal attack and 10 ranks to go through at that rate before second rank). All this had me quickly throwing in the towel.

*****

So in short:

I'm looking for a free mmo thats easy to play has a regular interface with sensible keybinds (m for map blah blah, normal stuff), isnt likely to be dropped by its publisher soon, doesn't rely on premium services too much and is of a fantasy or scifi genre preferably (except for mechs. For some reasns mech +mmo just doesnt seem right to me).

Any help is apreciated :)

Pick two, then get back to me.
Preferably good and free. MMO was tossed in there since I've yet to come across a long term 6 month +) engaging non mmo thats good and free.

I'd say give DDO another try.

The food/drink is so you party with healers. Gear in shops is crap, but missions give great stuff for little work. And the player base is friendly (i'm one of them) and have no problem helping with skills and the like. Just ask around.

Eh, I used to play Silkroad. That was alright, I guess. You can give it a try.

If you want a good free game, try out Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. It's a roguelike, and there's a bit of a learning curve, but it's my solitaire. It's also really, really difficult. I haven't beaten it yet - my characters keep dying. Definitely pick up the "tiles" version, as it's the one with graphics and mouse support. (Heresy, I know.) There's a lot of customization to characters, and it's got a great spellcasting system.

I've been burned from party because of WoW, my guild of 60 eventually turned into 6 douchebags who hounded me whereever i went. I only really play with people I already know now so I know where to hunt them down and beat them into something pink and squishy if they wont leave me alone.

If there was out of town regen I wouldnt care about lack of food/drink, but thats not there either and the rest shrines only heal a smallf raction of HP which is horrendous. should at least do a full heal since they only work once per entry of the area.

I really enjoyed Anarchy Online, I think you might like it since its a sci-fi MMO, the only problem is that you get Rubi-ka free, however Shadow Lands, Alien Invasion, and Lost Eden, cost money. But Rubi- Ka is so massive, I got lost quiet often, until I joined a org, then they explained everything to me. Its quiet immersive once you get the hang of everything.

Perfect World was kinda fun to me for a short time, and there's an "International" version (EU)

Non MMO's:

Trackmania Nations Forever is great fun, and free. Huge community of people playing.

Urban Terror is Quake 3 turned into Counterstrike, and all for free. (Or there's Quake Live too)

There's also netHack and Dwarf Dorf Fortress. Kind of hard to get into, but hours of frustrating but rewarding fun.

Do you wish you or your loved one was a fox or other anthromorphic creature? If so, then try second life!

Perfect World is awesome, though it's important to party up for instanced dungeons after level 21. The Shin Megami Tensei MMO, Imagine Online, is pretty cool too; it has a great mechanic in the form of your demon partner, fantastic music and lots of cool clothing.

Edit: I see you've already tried Imagine after reading your post properly. If you decide to give it another try, I can help you out a bit with my lv22 character.

The other one I've tried is Runes of Magic. It's a really nice fantasy MMO with cool graphics. The community is nice, but most of them don't speak much english (they aren't generally noobs, but it's full of europeans).

Oh gods no. I tried that during University as part of an assessment to evaluate various virtual communities. It was...bad...

Oddly DDO has alot of 30+ old players. Who care nothing for drama, are laid back, and just have fun with it. It's not a WOW guild where you must have this build you must have that gear.

No drama, just go with it. Ask question and enjoy. DDO is why I stopped playing WOW.
I want raids of 12 people that take one hour max. Not 40 people in a badly laid out coding barf of a giant with 50k hp and will wipe 40 people if someone -pulls- wrong.

There is no pointless Kill count website tracking your progress. No pvp outside the taverns or WOW's foolish catering to jackasses who instance with a party then kick everyone out of it so they can loot the end chest alone.

I would recommend Mabinogi by Nexon, while it does have its flaws it has kept my attention for quite some time.
Pros:
-Addictive gameplay
-Clothes, armor, and weapons change colors every game day
-no set class, level up the skills you use
-Transformation, transform into Paladin/Dark Knight (for humans), Falcon (for elves), or Savage Beast (for giants) once you've finished the quests.
-Plenty of dungeons, as well as field monsters
-Unique fighting style
-Semi-Tactical battle (mainly in use of skills, and when to attack)
-Character cusomization
-Life skills, such as black smithing, Taloring, and music playing
-Almost every item can be upgraded and enchanted
-3 races to choose from
Cons:
-Money is hard to earn without use of Part Time Jobs, Harder still for low levels
-Equipment is high matinance, you often need to repair, and repairs can become expensive, very few reliable repairs.
-Holywater is almost essential as it slows damage on equipment and helps with repairs
-Monsters in dungeons will swarm you if your not careful, this can spell imminent death
-Mages are looked down on by many players due to PvP abillities from a distance. Hit immediatly or you're likely doomed
-Several very annoying players
-If you don't learn the tactics you will quickly get killed (ex. Hit untill enemy is knocked back -> use counterattack -> use defend -> repeat)

This is simply a few examples of the Pros and Cons of Mabinogi, overall its a good game, and you can overcome the cons with a little hard work and patience.
