I dunno if it is on GOG but get morrowind, it's so low spec my microwave can run it. Easy 300 hour time sink, more if you want to play good cop then bad bad cop.

Fallout 1 and 2 are on there, no clue what there like but it's fallout, how bad can they be?

Also, total annihilation. It's an RTS game that lets you create a silly amount of units. Very fun, even for non RTS lovers, it is the very definition of build lots o' shit and throw it at the enemy!

Another also, TF2. It's free, how can you argue with a constantly updated (like every 5 mins!) free game?

Diablo series, The other Deus Exs, KOTOR (II), Half Life, the Hitman series, Terraria, Minecraft, Any of Valve's games, Maybe the first two F.E.A.R games (which run shockingly well on my lower end laptop) If you DO NOT HAVE an integrated graphics card, maybe Amnesia or Magicka. Amnesia has integrated Issues, Magicka is 100% impossible to run on integrated cards, it has optimization issues.
Ive got an IGP, and I can play both of those games pretty well, albeit on lower settings.

OT: I would reccomend the original Deus Ex, battlefield 2, tf2 (its FREE), pretty much any valve game and minecraft/terraria.

Atom Zombie Smasher, Cthulhu Saves the World, most Valve games, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (which runs extremely well on my $375 laptop, less than 300 pounds)

Indie games and freeware shine when you're looking for stuff that can install on a microwave, especially if you enjoy games with an arcade flavor. Look toward Steam for the indie titles, and for freeware even the most basic google-fu will get you hundreds of good downloads.

If you're looking for more 'regular' games with low minimum specs and don't mind playing older titles then I'll throw my weight behind the previous recommendations of Steam (again) or GoG.

You'll really want to look for games with specs through the floor if conserving battery life is an issue. Things like NES/SNES emulators or simple freeware games will last a lot longer on a single charge than Torchlight or Half-Life.

Warcraft III and the first Starcraft, if you like RTSs, and they come in convenient battle chests that include their expansions. Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends was tons of fun too.
Halo and Halo 2, for FPS goodness.
Psychonauts, because it's friggin' Psychonauts.
If you like mindless click-button-kill-everything dungeon-crawler fun, I liked Torchlight and Titan Quest.
All these games, especially the first ones, should run at medium-max settings on your laptop.
