PROTIP: Anyone who asks for your password is trying to scam you. I don't care if it's your password for a single online video game, you DON'T GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORDS. If a friend sent it, assume the service they use has been hacked by a scammer.

From what I see from your post, the guy who sent it fell for this trick, and all his friends got the same message that you did, it's the cheapest advertising you can hope for.

Anything that asks for your password is always a scam.
Fixed. Follow this rule for all.
This is a golden rule - genuine sites never require you to log into a 3rd party website using your password in order to 'give' you something. They do however do this when they want to take something - your account details.

As others have said, check the URL - maybe do a whois lookup lookup, follow the 'if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is' rule and apply a good dose of common sense, asking here was a good start!

This is clearly a scam. If Microsoft were going to give out free points, the page you read would look real. I mean, there's only one logo on here, the words "xbox live" don't have a trademark or registered trademark symbol, there's no statement declaring copyright, and it would certainly look a lot better.
