I liked building a castle in Stronghold 2 but, the combat was horrid, everything was silly, and the game is very dated. I loved Medieval 2 total war on the other hand. Everything was great and all but sometimes I just want to sit back and run one town.

Does anybody know a game that fits this? Preferably with combat similar to total war?

*edit: I played Age of Empires 2 but it feels pretty old. Too streamlined and no depth into daily life.

have you tried looking under your dresser? sorry, couldn't resist.

OT: i've actually been looking for something like that, too, so i'll be interested to see what responses pop up.

Civilization IV, yet it isn't directed entirely towards combat. Overall, it's just monitor resources, establish towns, train units, shit on someone's doorstep and declare war, or just use the dev mode to nuke and rampart any city that you want.

Fun game, yet I don't know if it would appeal to you considering the differences.

Anno1404!
Great fun and it gets pretty hard later on!
but it hasn't got much combat, its more about taking care of your people.

Anno looks pretty good. I heard they're doing a stronhold 3 which is supposed to actually be good.

I have civ 4, and its great and all but as I said, I'm looking more into ruling a town then an empire.

Sierra has a game series that might be just what you are looking for. Master of Olympus [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeus:_Master_of_Olympus] is my favorite city simulator. You take controll over an ancient Greek city and build it to greatness.

It came out ages ago so you can it really cheap.

Rise of Nations maybe?
World map you just decide where to attack and you build up from scratch every battle, gets repetitive but means you don't have to worry about how much money your faction has and you don't get screwed over because you moved your army a bit too far away.
