I'm calling a lute, it sounds just like one, and having played one (dude came to school with it, did a workshop, was awesome!), I'd recognises a lute, or I think I would.

It's really hard to say because a lot of stringed instruments can sound like that if you play them right. My guess was ukelele, they're tonally identical in the high register:

But in reality, lutes and nylon stringed acoustic guitars can also be made to sound exactly like that depending on where and how you play them.

I'm going to have to agree with zombiestrangler. Pretty sure it's a mandolin. The tone's not quite rich enough for most lutes I know of.

That's probably a balalaika, often featured in traditional Russian music.

Basically it could could be any high register steel string instrument, but I will go with Balalaika or Mandolin. I am very familiar with almost all instruments but brass and woodwind are my expertise.

Your best bet would be Balalaika and Mandolin, but one thing is sure you can limit your search to steel string instrument.

Okay, that convinced me, it's Balalaika for sure. Not mandolin, because a mandolin has 8 strings and I can't hear the familiar doubling sound that it produces.
