Hey fellow escapists. I need help getting the name of a fairly old game that for the life of me I can't remember. There's only a few things I can remember of it:

* You play as either a normal guy or some monstrous thing
* The game is a sidescrolling action game from what I can recall
* It's at least 5+ years old
* The end of a level is a door which is generally locked by a key
* There's multiple floors, not just 1 in a level
* I'm pretty sure that when you play as the human guy you use a pistol....

And that's it. It would be appreciated if anyone could help me out :)

Congratulations, you have described everything between Abuse and Metal Slug.

Because there are like, thousand of games that fit that.

I'm sorry, but I doubt you will receive a definitive answer to you problem, if only because there are so many clones and arcade varients and whatnot of almost every single possible variation you can do a side-scroller about.

The best we can do is throw names at you and hope one sounds more familiar than others.

Yeah, what you describe there could be... just about anything, but it does sound like something in the Metroidvania [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Metroidvania] range.

[sub]Haha I linked to TVTropes and therefore have stolen your evening assuming you actually click the link. Just one more tab![/sub]

EDIT: It would help if you told us what platform it was for...

Yes T.VTropes has a habit of sucking you in and turning 7 A.M into 7 P.M with little trouble.

On-topic, could it be that Shadow Complex game which came out on XBLA?.

Nah, Shadow Complex is too recent.

Yeah, I realise now how general that was, sorry bout that.

The game is for the PC, the graphics aren't anything like Metal Slug, taking this sort of dark and gloomy approach and it's set mostly in some sort of prison/industrial environment from what I can remember.

Just to make sure I didn't hit it in my first post, was it anything like this:

Unfortunately no, it wasn't really sci-fi.

That's really close, it had a less arcade look to it though and looked more like a proper game you'd get on your PC at the time.

Well if that is all you can give us and my original guess was wrong, that is all the help I can give on this matter.

Sorry.

Don't worry, all I had was a couple memories of the game and they were fairly vague. I wasn't expecting to get it anyway, I was just hoping that someone who played the game I had in my head was on.

I've got Contra: Shattered Soldier

And

Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project

That's all I can get at this moment with my tired head.

Don't worry, once you learn every trope you stop getting lost there. But by then it's too late...

OT: Um... uh... Contra? That's all I got.
