Well, one under-the-radar artist that I'd mention in the same sentence as Stanley Kubrick and Jesus Christ is Vienna Teng, who I am officially sure 2 people on earth know about.

Be prepared, I've got a lot here. Hopefully all my code worked properly, I dont want to have just wasted an hour typing and searching :p Here is a good assortment of some of my favorite songs from bands you've probably never heard of.

Falconer- Swedish Power/Folk metal. Really fast in some songs, about half are in Swedish, half are in English, and a voice you wouldn't expect in a metal band :)

English
Carnival of Disgust
Spirit of the Hawk
The Clarion Call
The Legend and the Lore

Swedish
Vid Rosornas Grav
Ridom, Ridom
Svarta Änkan
O, Tysta Ensamhet

Alestorm- Scottish Pirate Folk Metal. Yep, you heard that right. Kind of fast, like Falconer, but it is all in good fun
Keelhauled
Shipwrecked
You are a Pirate!
Swashbuckled
^This one is making fun of another Pirate band, "Swashbuckle"^
No Quarter

Korpiklaani- Folk metal again, frequently using banjos, accordions, fiddles, flutes, etc. The singer has quite a growl to his voice, and it may seem a little heavy, but its one of the happiest bands I've ever heard.

Vodka
Tequila
Metsamies
...and lastly from them, a Motorhead cover, complete with violin guitar solos :p
Iron fist

Puscifer- The love child of Maynard James Keenan (you may know him from "Tool") and Milla Jovovich. Kind of a trance-ish alternative band, really interesting.

The Mission
Queen B
Indigo Children
Momma Sed
And now, time to make fun of country :)
Cuntry Boner

Nightwish Probably the most popular of the bands I am suggesting here, a lovely European power metal band, with female vocal leads, with a distinct opera sound to her voice. In some songs, they allow Marco to sing as well, and I must say, he has the exact beard I want to grow one day XD

For most of the bands existance, they had a vocalist named Tarja Turunen, the woman with the opera voice, giving the band a unique, mysterious feel. For their most recent album, due to conflict, Tarja was replaced by Annette Olzon, bringing a new flavor to the band. Annette also has a upper soprano range, but has more of a pop feel to her voice.

Tarja Turunen
Over the hills and Far Away
Siren
Nemo

Annette Olzon
Storytime
Amaranth
Bye bye Beautiful

Hell, lets throw some Marco into the mix :D

Marco
The Islander

Lastly, a bit of Eluveitie, yet another folk metal band (I like folk metal, okay?) from Switzerland. They have two vocalists, one male, and one female. I only listen to the female most of the time, not personally a fan of growling/screamo.
Interesting side note, some of their songs are in an extinct language called Gaulish.
Omnos

One more! the Dreadnoughts are a punk polka metal group from Vancouver, and they are just friggin awesome.

Antarctica

Polka Never Dies!
If you actually listened to all that, I love you.

Well, I'm always happy to recommend this band that deserves a hell of alot more recognition that they currently get.
The band was started by a member of KsE so he can make more personal music. And, damn, does it show.

EDIT: I was reminded of Ludovico Einaudi by one of the other posts, and all I got to say is definitely check his stuff out.

Oh, there's also Starsailor, a band that is most known for making that song from the end credits of Metal Gear Solid 3. They had some pretty good songs,

Song: Discord.
By Super Ponybeat (Eurobeat)
Techno-y. (Not dub step).
Internet music artist.

Now before everyone fly's off the handle. Ya it's a MLP inspired song. No it is not some frilly piece of music spreading friendship. I'll let you to decide on if you like it or not. If you don't want to listen to it cause it's "Pony music", well you get to miss out. This is a thread about spreading new and rare songs to people to let them try it. So if your not here to share, what the hell are you here for.

Ayreon, Star One, Porcupine Tree, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Ambeon, Sky Architect, Yes, Shaolin Death Squad, After Forever, Stream of Passion, Rush, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater....

That's all I've got off the top of my head. They're all progressive bands (my favorite genre by far), with Ayreon being my favorite. Beautifully composed concept albums that touch on emotional levels.

Edit: This website has helped me find a ton of the music I listen to today. I hope you can get some use out of it... http://www.progarchives.com/

Ayreon (A progressive-rock/metal kind of band. Individual singers represent different characters and their albums each have an overarching story. Many of their albums also connect to one another in some way)

Star One (A side-project of the man behind Ayreon. Star One makes songs based on famous sci-fi movies and television shows. Everything from Star Wars, to Dune, to 2001 and more)

Sci-fi metal space-operas? Oh hell yes. Good metal never died, it just up and moved to Europe.
I'm glad someone else likes Arjen Lucassen! But you should have linked up some Human Equation and Electric Castle for Ayreon... =P My girlfriend just got me the Timeline compilation album, signed by Arjen no less, for Valentine's Day.

I prefer the spacey kind of music. Used to be into the more sceamo/post hardcore thing, can't really listen to it anymore.

My favorite bands:
Modest Mouse
Radiohead
Orbs (this band is crazy good, but almost no one knows about it)
Mars Volta
Pixies

You can't start a Modest Mouse set without this song

It was hard to choose their best song, it was a tie between this and "You".
Radiohead does seem to change over time, with Pablo Honey being more rock and OK Computer and The Bends being spacier. I haven't listened to too much more Radiohead.

There's something beautiful with how creepy and amazing this song is.

Some of their songs do run on a bit with just random noice sometimes (like the sounds of water dripping for a couple minutes), but it's the irony in music making you have to enjoy.

Easily on of the best The Pixies songs ever made.
This band is like the Grandfather of most alternative music--bands like Modest Mouse.

Feel Good inc.
DARE
Clint Eastwood
Just to name a few.
November Has Come and Rock the House are some of my favorite song by them
mostly because of the line, "It's awfully groovy seeing all the treasure and the booty."
Makes me laugh every time.

Mama's Pride, the best blues band you've never heard of out of St. Louis, MO.

Andy McKee does some amazing acoustic guitar two handed tapping.

Michael Franks for some smooth, sexy jazz. This is music to get laid to.

Joe Satriani is great for instrumental guitar rock wankery

MC Frontalot flowin some Nerdcore rap at it's finest.

Riot's album Thundersteel is metal to game to...I love it for D&D, Warhammer40k, or I guess with one of these new fangled vidya games.

A group called 2nu does some great storytelling set to music.

I love all kinds of music...I could post for hours, but this is a good start.

Listen to this, I guarantee that you'll like it :D
Why would you make guarantees like that with boring music that sounds like the singer is a 13 year old with his balls in a in between two bricks?
Well I was guaranteeing it to the OP, not anyone else. His voice is a little nasally, but it's not high pitched, and it's not even that bad. That sucks that you find it boring, but I find it enjoyable.

I guess you're not really into pop-rock bands, and this song is way different than their usual sound.

Oh and try not to be so rude next time, plus I don't quite understand what compelled you to criticize the song I posted, the thread is for recommending music to the OP not to criticize what people post, I suggest if you want to do that, go to the few "Rate the song above you" threads.

So many choices D: If I wanted to start putting up all my favorite songs from them, the entire post would have just been Ayreon, lol.

For the record, The Human Equation is my favorite Ayreon album ^^

Iron Savior's storytelling isn't quite as polished, but I think their music makes up for it in intensity. "Thunderbird" gets me so pumped.
