I don't think they'd be stupid enough to come back, but a cap gun is good for warning shots.
WHAT?!

Dude, this is terrible advice, do not wave anything around that looks like a gun, unless its a gun you're willing to use. A cap gun? Seriously?

Otherwise decent advice in this thread.
Loud noises startle nervous people nosing around in stuff that doesn't belong to them. It's a good idea.
What if they have a gun? What if instead of comically running away they react violently? Why alert them to your position with a loud noise that sounds nothing like a gun? What if they're high as hell? etc etc
If the thieves had a real gun then he'd be screwed anyway. I doubt that they would come back without a good reason and shooting people will only make it worse for them.
Look I'm not going to argue with you any more about this.

Police themselves have never advocated such advice. If someone breaks into your house, leave and call police. Grab an actual weapon to defend yourself with if it will help.
Just as I said; it's good for warning shots. If things get worse then a real weapon on backup and the Cops on speedial should follow up.
What warning shots? He doesn't have a real gun. Why not just shout?
Caps guns are loud as hell in tight spaces and scare the shit out of people even if they're expecting it.
Do we want the breaker-iner to react in fear or do we want them to react rationally?

Rational: The few hundred dollars will not be worth jail-time.
Irrational: Oh god I am fighting for my life against a man with a gun.
Fight or flight. Since it's not their house I think the latter would be the preference.

And you're right, this is not worth continuing.

Get the sound of a riot gun loading and play it loudly when you hear someone medling. I know the last thing I'd want to hear if I'm trespassing is that.

Alternatively, borrow a sizeable dog?

Why take that risk, why bank on the hope they'll run, rather than just not-scaring-the-shit-out-of-them? People who break into houses aren;t usually normal people. As I said before, they could be high, crazy, violent, armed - you don't know. So don't advocate things that will put this guy in danger.

I personally doubt if someone broke into your house you'd stand there and shoot a cap gun.

I actually very much doubt they'd do it again. They rarely hit the same spot twice. Especially since they now know there is an alarm system in place. But, if you are going to be there - leave lights on, watch t.v., etc, etc. Noise that someone is home basically. Take a bat with you, or something you feel comfortable with for defending yourself.

I had a situation where someone broke into my house at night, while I was still in it. My husband left for work not 30 minutes before this happened. I was getting ready for bed, and the windows facing the street were all dark. So I guess they assumed that we weren't home. I heard them break into the house and start creeping around in the kitchen/living room. I closed the bedroom door, locked it, grabbed my baseball bat, and called 911. They told me to lock myself in a smaller area with whoever else was in the house. I locked myself in the bathroom until police got there. By then the guy(s) were gone. They said that they probably got out of there when they heard someone was home.

Unless you are actually confronted, most suggest you 'hide' and call the authorities. It may seem cowardly to some, but it's a better chance at staying safe and alive. People do stupid things when startled or panicked, especially the type of people who will break into other peoples homes, desperate for money and ready to take what they need.

It also depends on where you live. My husband says that shooting someone or setting your dog on an unwanted intruder in his part of Montana, U.S. was not frowned upon. They wouldn't even put your dog down. But here in California, U.S. - he says it's a different story legally. You basically have to shout and see if they are armed or unarmed or shit gets unreal for you, even if you feared for your life. Isn't it always? Welcome to California! *raspberry*

Because our criminal code is messes up only if the burglar is unarmed and you use a knife pretty sure the shit will legally hit the fan for you. All you can do is call the police and tell them. Pretty good chance he wont come back he wouldn't be that stupid surely...

Did you know that people with guilty consciences are more easily startled by loud noises?

stay up all night with the lights on hell have friends over get six people or more in the house have music on make it look as active as possible so even with them coming back (there would be slim chance of that in the first place) the're going to see there isn't any hope of them getting in there and out with no one noticing and in the case that they do have cricket bats on hand do not use a knife use only blunt weapons with a long reach that are common house hold items safest option both legally and physically.

Just get something large and intimidating, like a bat or a big-ass knife, and wait.
You said that it was your dads house, meaning there will be someone else with you, who should ALSO have a large, intimidating weapon.

They're not likely to return at all anyways, but if they return to a guy with a crowbar and a baseball bat, they'll probably think twice about entering the building.

Knife is fine if you can use it and I mean you need training. Baseball bat is good. Pepper spray and a taser if you got 'em(and if they are legal). Mostly though make sure your phone has a good charge and the cops on speed dial.

Warning?
Cap guns sound nothing like real guns, you'll get a small jump out of them and then a giggle as they realise what you have.

Honestly that's poor advice.

The guy needs a bat at most and a phone, stay together in a room if they do come in. The thing is you don't want to escalate the situation.
They're coming for stuff and not for you, the bat is a mean of defence and not attack or antagonization like say a cap gun.

Moot point, really. Criminals are generally stupid, but not usually stupid enough to hit a place with an alarm... AGAIN. Lights on should do the trick, though. There's a reason they're sneaking around in the middle of the night (hint hint: they don't want to run into anyone) and not during the day when people are awake.

Thank the Maker for Stand Your Ground/Castle Law states.

I heard that most knives get used against the person who owns it. But that's probably just a rough average related to the little dickless chav kids that carry them around getting themselves mixed up with actual criminals.

I'd say bring something like a bat, but I doubt they'll come back, the police could have been called in that amount of time.

Fuck the knife. Youre australian. Go get a batch of crocs, snakes, giant ass spiders or any of the other 50,000,000 things that can kill you and put it in the yard. That way if someone happens to come over and gets eaten, poisoned, kicked in the face, etc then it aint your fault.
Shit happens right? Aint your fault if some local wildlife ate their faces.
Mate its Australia they are already in our backyard :)

If you can i highly advise a crowbar. Because if you bring a bat, you've brought that bat with a purpose, if its a crowbar you can say they brought it with them and you took it off them, or they dropped it in the struggle, but if you use a crowbar, knee cap them. For the cops you need to show you have no intension of severely injuring or killing them, just smack them across the knee and say "Well i didnt want him attacking me, so i just attacked his knee to stop him fast"

Bring a new door and tools to get it in place.
Also, notify the police and make sure the alarm works.

You underestimate the stupidity of us Australians.

By all means bring a baseball bat or something...don't bring a knife, methinks that's too extreme.
Man, I live in Australia, and to see stupidity I only need to look at my High School.

Keep a giant, strong stick near by. Main thing is just be alert. Improvisation with anything you can get your hands on is great, since it can't bite you on the rear legally (E.g: Oh no, burglars! This long, steel vacuum cleaner pipe is the closest thing to me!)
Hang on a second, I'm curious.

Say somebody breaks into my house (With the intent of stealing something), but they discover I'm home and attack me. The nearest thing to me is a Combat Knife, followed by a bow and arrow followed by numerous firearms.

I'm not sure if you know the laws here (I live in the UK, by the way), but what if I defend myself with one of these, even though it is the closest reasonable thing to defend myself with? Will it be deemed excessive?
