Just as me rambeling, but we need more anime of a military tactic variety. I'm tired of anime being about one OP guy who can destroy an entire army. I want a general leading an army of normal guys in epic full-scale battles. If anyone know of any, feel free to lay em on me.
I felt that was one of the big problems with the second season of Code Geass(and a bit of the first season). By then, all of the OP personal Knightmares had been invented with the sort of ridiculously fast tech advancement that would make WWII's tank progression say "woah, slow the fuck down".

Being a big military history enthusiast, for a while I'd been looking for a good military anime, but most of them either have the OP mecha problem or are like the Valkyria Chronicles anime, where no one in the show knows anything about basic military tactics, strategy, or policy, and it irks me to now end.

I also haven't watched either of the shows you're asking about, but seeing as your accepting recommendations...

From my skimming of the posts here it seems, amazingly, that only one other person has recommended Black Lagoon.
Black Lagoon is an explosion filled, car smashing, boat busting, action-packed anime about a Japanese business man, taken hostage by a group of pirates, running in a WWII PT-boat, all based in the 90's.

Yep, it's as awesome as it sounds. Whilst it is full of action and sometimes lighthearted, it can get surprisingly dark and deep about life at times. Also, the English dub was spectacularly done. I'd say overall it's just as good if not slightly better than Bebop.

There's not really any good clip or trailer for Lagoon, So, uhm...Here's the first episode, if you're interested. :p

Also, I simply must recommend the wondrous show Spice & Wolf.

S&W is about a merchant in a medieval setting, and a strange female he encounters, who ends up becoming his travelling companion. It's very unique, I've never seen anything like it before or since. However, it's not super action packed, and some might even get bored from the economics part of it. But when things do kick off, it's quite intense.

As with Lagoon, the English dub is stupendous thanks to Funimation.

It just so happens that the first episode of S&W is also freely available on youtube...How convenient!

Recommendations? Uhhh...
Attack on Titan (aka Shingeki no Kyojin)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Sword Art Online
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (trust me, it's hilarious)
Death Note
School Days (because you can't appreciate the really good stuff unless you've experienced the bad as well)

As for the Fate series, yes, Fate/StayNight will help you understand Fate/Zero a little more. That being said, Fate/StayNight is just kind of "meh" and Fate/Zero has an exposition dump episode right at the very beginning. Zero has a much better story, more interesting characters and every action scene is amazing.

I watched that magica madoka thing. It was alright. I don't know if it justifies how much people seem to be hyping it, but you could certainly do worse. On the subject of better however, There is a startling lack of Excel Saga, Nerima Daikon Brothers, and also the Kids on the Slope. The first two are fun and silly Nabeshin shows, the third is a lesser known work from the guy that did Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, it's about unrequited love, friendship and jazz music.

It makes me weep into my giant robot chest every goddamn episode. I don't even know why sometimes.

Also, if you want to watch a "pretty good" drama that goes on like, forever, check out "Monster". It's kinda like the fugitive, except it's in germany, and everyone is gobbling up all the sausage they can get their greasy mitts on.

Gurren Lagann really...REALLY great Anime!! back me up people...
I gave up on it after about 5-6 episodes. So I can't say I would back you up.
I heard of it it was quite hyped; so tried it and I was underwhelmed. It might get better later but watching bleach and naruto for longer then I should killed my ability wait for it to get better. If I am asked why it killed my ability to wait it to get better then I will answer.

The next would be the Fate series. From what I've heard (from a staggering TWO SOURCES!), Fate/Stay Night is kinda "meh", but Fate/Zero is supposed to be pretty damn good. Any advice on that series? More specifically, is it better to have watched Stay Night before watching Zero? Apparently Zero came second but is meant to be a prequel, so is there anything wrong with watching them out of order?
Okay, here's the thing with Fate Zero. It spoils the FUCK out of Stay Night.

Fate Stay Night is all about this guy, Shiro, who accidentally gets involved in this big contest thing. He has no clue what is going on and much of the show revolves around him figuring out A) what is happening and B) what happened in the previous contest, as it has had a major impact on this one.

Fate Zero is set in the previous contest. It features characters who are not in the dark, who know everything up front, and who operate accordingly. Thus both of the major mysteries of Stay Night are spoiled (since learning the basic events of Zero is the main plot of Stay Night).

Also, Fate Zero operates on the assumption that you already know the ending. It doesn't hide certain things because Stay Night already "spoiled" them.

So that's the issue of spoilers.

HOWEVER... the main issue with Stay Night is not that it is meh. It is the fact that they could have done it with half as many episodes. The show starts REALLY slowly. It is a good show, but it takes a long time to get moving and never really gets up to a good speed.

Basically, it's 26 episodes, but it should have been 13.

Also, in their attempt to include multiple branches from the original game, the plot has a tendency to meander a bit.

Fate Stay Night is certainly worth watching. Just be prepared for a slow burn. Also, you probably won't need to watch it more than once.

Another benefit to watching Stay Night is this - afterwards, you can watch the Unlimited Blade Works movie. Unlimited Blade Works is the second game path. It retells the entire series in a 2 hour movie, but the plot changes direction and takes you through an entirely different version of events.

... that didn't make sense. Let me re-explain.

The Series is the first path. A specific characters is wounded in the first few episodes of the series, and this has a major impact on the plot.

Unlimited Blade works starts the same, but the character never gets injured. This character being unhurt allows that character to alter events, only mildly at first, but to a greater and greater degree until the two stories barely resemble one another - and then things take a HUGE left turn and the two branches end entirely differently.

There's a third branch which is currently being made into an anime (or maybe a movie, I forget). The third branch is my favorite and I'm thrilled to see it.

SO... to sum up.

Yes, you should watch Stay Night first.

Then you can watch Fate Zero without spoilers.

If you want to watch the series again, watch Unlimited Blade Works instead for the fast-forward version which is also far more awesome.

OR...

Plan B: If you get bored watching Stay Night, then just switch over to Unlimited Blade Works. It pulls most of the same reveals (not all), enough anyway that you should be able to follow Fate Zero.

I've seen a few people recommending Sword Art Online in this thread. I cannot agree more. That show was so good, I'm still depressed it's over and I watched it nearly 2 months ago. SAO may be my favorite anime of all time.

Ah.

Well then, as for your Stay Night experience, I have this to say:

Watch Unlimited Blade Works first once you finish Zero.

You already know about the Grail War, all the rules, etc. Stay Night spends a LONG time going over that info - UBW takes aprox five minutes.

Plus, seeing UBW first will make certain parts of Stay Night FAR more interesting if/when you go to watch it.

Seriously, if you only watch one more thing from the Fate universe, make it Unlimited Blade Works.

As long as I get to hear Shiro say the legendary line "PEOPLE DIE IF THEY ARE KILLED!" then I'll be happy. :p

So.. did I not see Hunter X Hunter? well then... ahem, cough cough,cleary-throat noises...
You should really really watch Hunter X Hunter!!!
I'm not entirely sure how to even put the series into words, really good looking animation, amazing characters, anyone can die. It has a dark story, yet light moments, and can really make you feel sympathetic to terrible monsters. not to mention the opening song is catchy as the clap.
I am talking about the 2011 reboot, to clarify, I have not seen the 90's one, but I hear its good too

Yep, it's my turn to ask "what's a good anime to watch?"! But at least I've actually got a couple specific anime to ask about rather than just coming here and saying "THROW SOME ANIME TITLES AT ME, DAMNIT!"

Anywho, as you've probably guessed I'm looking for some new anime to get into, having watched the ever-loving shit out of my favorite anime (Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, and Bobobo) as well as a few others, now I'm looking to branch out and test the water with a couple new shows.

The first one I'm thinking of picking up is Soul Eater. Looks interesting, sounds interesting, do you have any general thoughts on it? Is it worth diving into or is it skippable?

The next would be the Fate series. From what I've heard (from a staggering TWO SOURCES!), Fate/Stay Night is kinda "meh", but Fate/Zero is supposed to be pretty damn good. Any advice on that series? Annnnnnnd I suppose if you wanna throw some random anime titles at me anyways, I'll go ahead and at least look into them. My tastes are mainly actiony stories and I'd prefer if I could avoid anything involving characters even remotely involved with high school. Seriously...why is it that so damn many anime shows feature characters in high school? Just gets a bit old after a while. I'd say I'd like to get into some good comedy anime, but really the only comedy anime I've ever liked is Bobobo...so if you know anything that's like Bobobo, then by all means let me know, if not, then I think I'll pass.

Thanks for the recommendations/advice!
Soul Eater was alright. It was pretty typical for a Shownen series, so you'll know what to expect.

Story: Pretty typical. I will say it avoided all the pitfalls I hate about Bleach and Naruto, such as fights that drag on for fifty episodes with no story, and over the top power levels. Plenty of action, but they keep it in reason. Decent humor.

Characters: I found the two main characters unusually likable, they had a unique flare to them that separated them from a lot of other shonen protagonists. This doesn't hold up for the supporting cast though. A lot of them feel like Naruto and Bleach ripoffs, especially dark star, who I hated. I'm not sure if he's supposed to be a parody of Naruto or not, and maybe that's the problem. This means half the characters are great, and the other half are tolerable. Their certainly not Shinji Ikari, but the characters are quirky enough to be likable.

Art: The biggest draw, because it's unique. It reminds me of a Tim Burton movie, before he sucked. Overall, it's the best mindless action show out there, and if you want simple entertainment then you won't be disappointed. It's fun show.

As for recommendations, the usual fair for me: Berserk, Neon Genesis, Elfen Lied, Berserk, and, seriously, check out Saikano. And Berserk.

It's all good. I probably should have highlighted the name or something, make it stand out a little.
