So recently I've been quite bored with my collection of games. I've mostly just been playing Team Fortress 2 and Dwarf Fortress for the past few weeks and it's starting to feel pretty monotonous. Since I don't have any urge to play my other games, I figured that I needed to buy another game to relieve my boredom. One game that I've been contemplating purchasing for a while is Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

I've generally heard positive things about Morrowind. Some claim it's better than Oblivion, but to me that doesn't really matter. What I do care about is if it features the major part of Oblivion that I liked. I'm the kind of gamer that can easily entertain themselves when they have a big open world to run around in. Oblivion gave me this large, expansive world that I could waste hours wandering through doing absolutely nothing yet still managing to keep myself entertained. I'm wondering if Morrowind has a similar open world, since that would be a great thing for me to sink time into. From what I've gathered from reading older threads, I know there are a lot of other differences between the two games, so I'd also be interested in hearing those.

Also, I know that there are some good mods for Morrowind, but I'm more interested in playing the vanilla game, at least at first. However, any mods that update graphics or improve parts of the game that could be considered broken would be welcome. Anyways, I'll take any advice you guys could offer. Thanks for the help in advance.

Morrowind's world is far bigger and more immersive than Oblivion's. If you're looking for depth, Morrowind is your game.

Morrowind is amazing, one of my favourite games of all time in fact, and if you liked Oblivion it's pretty much a guarantee that you'll like Morrowind too, so just buy it.
A few key differences;

Morrowind does have leveling, but it's not quite as obvious as it it in Oblivion, so when you're weak you will often wander into places way too tough for you and get your ass handed to you on a plate, so save often.

Morrowind let's you kill quest essential characters, so you need to be carefull some times.

Morrwind's combat is different to Oblivion's, it's more based on stats than player skill.

I thought someone else did this exact same question about 2 hours ago. Oh well. Morrowind has a greater variety of environments. It doesn't have a long intro before dropping you into the main story either which is actually a bonus. However, save often! You can truly get into areas with creatures/people much higher level than you are easily.

Other things of note: You need some sort of long-range attack. NEED IT!
Alchemy is your friend and a nice path to cash.
You can be walking on sunshine (levitate) in this game but beware
of the spell wearing off suddenly!
Other than that? Have a good time. It's a great game.

It's bigger, the storyline is much better, the faction quests are infinitely deeper and better, but the one thing that Oblivion has better is the combat system. If you mod Morrowind you can have similar combat, but if you're running on say the Xbox the combat isn't as good.

But I LOVE Morrowind, epic loading screens aside. Oh and get your hand on a guide of some kind because it's VERY easy to get lost. There's no holding hands in Morrowind like there is in Oblivion.

Morrowind's story is good and the lore is also good. Reading the wall of text is pleasing most of the time. As you asked yes it has a big world with lot to explore with an unique landscape diffrent from the generic fastasy-esque type games.

But it has horrid combat, clunky interface( for example the alchemy was clunky since everytime I dragged or clicked something it had an annoying 1 Sec delay with it which most cases killed the immersion), it lackes the modder-base that Oblivion has(Though some great mods are for Morrowind), The world isn't really that lively.

But the game is playable and worth a play for sure.

It's not exactly a game in which you can do nothing and keep yourself entertained. The scenery, although pretty breathtaking at first, soon becomes dull and random encounters are, if pleniful, rather repetitive.

But there's a hell of a lot to explore, and missions that don't exactly touch the main storyline (Which is pretty barebone if you ask me) but still develop the things that make Morrowind so memorable. Go read a book, or an entire library if you feel like it, or manage to scrape 100 gold together by hunting Cliff Racers for a week, which is a pretty cool way to earn your money, if a bit slow.

So yeah, it's not your game if you seek to 'dick around' but it is if you want to spend hours upon hours following a (side)quest line.

Morrowind is far deeper than Oblivion. The characters aren't voice acted, and I consider this a good thing compared to Oblivion's whole 4 voice actors or so for 1000 NPC's. But every NPC you can talk to and get to know their personality and backstory.

So yeah, its much deeper than Oblivion. I don't know if the physical worldspace is larger or not, but it is a lot more fun and deep.

And for the graphics mods and whatnot, I recommend the Morrowind Graphics Extender [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5535].

However if you buy the Steam version you'll have to change the dates of the BSA's. If possible I suggest buying the physical copy.
