1) Blind Guardian
2) Iced Earth
3) Trans-Siberian Orchestra
4) They Might Be Giants
5) Boogie Matrix Mechanism
6) Flogging Molly
7) Demons & Wizards

Those are seven bands with awesome music. Blind Guardian has a discography that will keep you occupied for at least 5 hours and Iced Earth has nearly that. TSO is well known for their Christmas albums, but they've done one non-Christmas album that was damn good and some of their Christmas stuff barely qualifies as Cristmas music. TMBG is just eclectic and strange, but awesome, same with BMM. Flogging Molly is Celtic punk music, hilarious and epic. D&W...well, one of their albums is based on the Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

Solitude Aeturnus. Any album is good, but if you haven't listened to them before, the best album to start with is 'Alone'.

They are quite simply the greatest band of all time.

Another album worth checking out is Blind Guardian - Nightfall In Middle-Earth. I normally have no time for power metal, but I can't get enough of said album.

Try Gogol Bordello.

They describe themselves as immigrant punk. It's the only punk band I know of that employs a violinist and an accordionist.

You say you won't listen to rap, but that is a huge generalization, and you should feel sad for saying it.

Non rap related: The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

Rap related: Brother Ali - Us
Atmosphere - When life gives you lemons, you paint that shit gold.
Lupe Fiasco - The Cool
Flobots - Fight with tools

Just to name a few

I know this has been done to death before, but I'm in desperate need of music.

Im going on a 10 hour trip to Florida tomorrow and I need music for the ride down and I forgot the books I wanted to read on the way.

So, I obviously turn to the Escapist for help.

And as for the music I like, well I pretty much will listen to anything except rap and country. Seriously, I've got everything from Alanis Morressette to Children of Bodom on my iPod.
Interesting. I happen to live in that sweltering hell-hole of a state. Don't forget to say "Sup" on your way past Tallahassee.

Anyways, if you haven't already, try listening to Tool. If you have the patience for 7:00+ songs, then you'll have no problem with them.

Radiohead is also perfect travelling music, I've found.

You should check out Information Society's album "Don't Be Afraid". You might recognize the instrumental on it if you played one of the best PlayStation games ever. [small]In my humble opinion of course.[/small]

I must update. I realise that my original reccomendation isn't for everyone so try this. It's Aphex Twin and from the album "Selected Ambient Works 85-92". You may like ambience, you may not.

I like Murder By Death's Red of Tooth and Claw a ton. Despite their name they are actually a pretty neat alternative band with strong country influences.

Hospice by the Antlers is a soft airy album that I think is great.

Twin Cinema by the New Pornographers

Also the Pixies are just an amazing band in general. If you don't have any Pixies, you can't rightfully say you're a music enthusiast.

Well that's a bit extreme but they are a great alternative band that's hugely influential. Doolittle and Surfer Rosa are their two most known. But you could easily get a mish mash from all their albums. (Not to brag but I have devised a Pixie's "starter kit" because a lot of my friends decided they wanted to start listening to them)

You should also feel good about the fact you'll be within close proximity to moi, that prospect alone should make your trip a wonderful experience.

Band names + Albums:

Hurt: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.

Journey: Revelation and Escape.
Exodus: Tempo of the Damned, Shovel Headed Kill Machine and The Atrocity Exhibition Exhibit A
Architects: Hollow Crown.
Breaking Benjamin: Dear Agony and Phobia

That's all I'll leave you with for now :) Not sure if all that will fill 10 hours though.

How Rap? Check out Playmate of the Year by Zebrahead. Tell me if that's too much "rap" for you.

And if you want something quite thoroughly entertaining, listen to Scenes from a Memory by Dream Theater.

You are my new best friend. I thought I was the only person here who knew Iced Earth and Blind Guardian. The only one I haven't heard of on your list is Boogie Matrix Mechanism. A recommendation for the thread and you is Sonata Arctica who is in a similar vain to IE and BG. Add Jonathan Coulton to the mix for some peppy/folk/hilarity and set to shuffle. Awesome car ride.

While that is awesome and I've found a new great band, don't be disin' CoB!

They may not be the best band in the world, but they're one of my favorites.

Though I like this band too. Where are they from?

Jonathan Coulton. Funny guy, did the Portal song. Has tons of great songs about zombies, monkeys, robots, etc.
