Hey escapists, so basically I need some new music to download/buy!
My taste is anything from indie to alternative rock to acoustic new wave or modern bluesy stuff.

Can anybody recommend me anything good?

Also, I just want to plug my 2 favourite albums of all time:

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady - Charles Mingus
My favourite jazz album ever. Its just at the height of technical skill and creativity. You never know where the music is going to go, blistering solos come thick and fast, Mingus really knows how to use dissonance in a way to create tension without losing any of the listenability.

69 Love Songs - the Magnetic Fields
Exactly as it says on the tin. 3 hours of songs, all to do with love. This may sound horrible, but singer/songwriter Stephin Merrit takes the subject in pretty much every situation, from every perspective and in pretty much any genre. His lyrics are really sharp and he really knows how to find the balance between cynicism and true affection which means the album never comes off as either too sugary or bitter.

Alternative rock and indie eh?

Hmmm... well the best I can pull out of my box are these two songs which should hopefully convince you to be hooked regardless of whether or not it fit's your genre =D

It's mostly punk and metal, but there's some indie, rock 'n' roll, dance and some pop in here. Give my Last.fm [http://www.last.fm/user/Cpt_Oblivious] radio a listen.

I say that because picking individual tracks on the spot is hard and this is a brilliant service.

Pearl Jam is pretty well-known alt rock, and some beautiful acoustic work, too.

And now, for a personal favorite...

The Black Angels are the best thing to happen to psychedelic rock in a long time, in case that floats your boat.

Bert Jansch's "Black Swan" album is pretty amazing. Blues-folk-rock, amazing technique and soul to every song on it.

Daft Punk. I'm generally a classic/arena rock kind of guy, but I just love Daft Punk

Audioslave are/were a great alternative rock band. Everyone seems to know Cochise, but they've got loads of great songs, like this. A lot like Rage Against The Machine but without the punk, it's more grown up.

I downloaded the Tron Legacy soundtrack they did last night, so far it's mostly background stuff so I'm a bit disappointed but who knows what the rest could be :)
And the other stuff they've done has always caught my interest.

You probably already know them but arcade fire i would recommend highly. For some older stuff The Velvet Underground is my favorite band of all time, Ben Kweller, Belle & Sebastian, Devotchka, Dan Black, The Format, The Pixies...just some i didn't see already mentioned but all great imo.

Going in that theme, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains are good alt/grunge bands. Cause thats what Pearl Jam is too, or at least how they got started and thats what the songs above are. The new Alice in Chains stuff is pretty good too (they took a more rock approach after they got Duvall).

Owl City has some good stuffs, and Mumford and Sons has that folksy feel to them too. Check out there songs Cave and Little Lion Men.
