I make it a point to never have friends that are smokers are thieves. Your friend is a thief, and he is thieving willingly. He is no longer your friend. Make him pay.
Did you just compare thieves to smokers?
Sorry, that was a typo I already corrected. What I meant to say was smokers or thieves.
So my point still stands. You've basically said a smoker is as bad as a thief.

That's not what I said. I just said I don't associate myself with either of them. That has nothing to do with which is worse or not
By putting them together like that you imply that they're just as bad; you're putting them in the same boat.

(for the record though, there is NOTHING worse than a smoker).
Oh but then you go and say something like that and now I can't take anything you say seriously anymore, so well done. You stay classy.

Ya know, I can understand distaste of his position, but you'd really do that to a friend of yours?
Alright, I'm going to hop up on my soap box for a few seconds. You don't have to agree with me but this is how I see it...

Piracy is bad, I think most of us can agree on that (or if you don't, you're probably not here on this forum since Mods have made the sites stance pretty damn clear).

Now, if someone was on welfare who shouldn't be, friend or not, would you report them? If someone is running an insurance scam, would you report them? If someone was skimming a bit of money off of bank transactions (think Office Space), would you report them?

I use those as examples because they're all examples of someone taking money from someone. Maybe you would report your friend and maybe you wouldn't but I'm thinking that THIS is where the OP is coming from. I'd be surprised if he was doing it for shits and giggles...

*EDIT: Note; I purposefully did not state what I thought about the issue. I'm merely thinking about how the OP is seeing the situation (though if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me OP)
Your pretty much right the fact is, like I said he will keep doing it now and in the long run will either get caught and face worse repercuisions or just prove piracy is a way to get free games for no risk and laugh in my face about it. I just need to scare him into stopping is all. I am not doing this out of spite.
Actually what you are doing (or rather proposing) is the definition of acting our of spite. That being said here are your options as I see them:
- Ignore it
- Tell him off
- Report him to Bethesda, and likely get him entangled in a legal battle or a fine

Which one of those would I recommend? The first, with the added condition that if this bothers you so much perhaps you should reevaluate your friendship. As for your stance, remember you aren't innocent either.

Edit: By the way, I don't see anyone in this thread who is innocent of copyright infringement. Look on the left hand side of the screen. See those pictures? See how they're all images of copyrighted things/images made by people other than the user (and therefore copyrighted by someone else)? Congratulations, we're all thieves.
I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I'd never been naughty back in the day (I will never pirate now but I'm sure I've done SOME kind of copyright breaking at some point on accident or without realizing it) but my avatar is my own creation :)

If it pisses you off so much then just report the damn guy. Piracy is still piracy no matter how you look at it. IT'S STILL ILLEGAL. Just because lots of people who pirate don't get caught doesn't mean that we should just ignore those criminals, especially if they can and will get caught if you act.

Also, if your "friend" pisses you off that much, then I say just find another guy to hang out with. Friends are replaceable.

I advise building up a reputation for showing mercy to merchant vessels that surrender. People are a lot more likely to lay down their weapons when they see your flag if they know you're there for their treasure, not their lives.

Well, if he pirates now he won't have any other options to get games once Bethesda hits him with a 30 million dollar lawsuit.

OP, I have to ask you: have you ever watched a youtube video that wasn't uploaded by the copyright owner? Ever listened to a song on youtube that wasn't part of an official channel? Ever downloaded a song, movie, or TV show? Ever used an image you didn't have explicit permission to use(hint: if you didn't personally make your avatar, you've definitely done that one)? Then you need to stop complaining about your friend, because you are literally just as much of a lawbreaker as he is. Modern copyright law is fundamentally broken. There's no need to ever get high and mighty about it like this.
You just gave me a superior-logic-boner. Thank you, friend.

OT: You're a pretty shitty friend OP. A lot of my friends do varing levels of drugs and while I don't share their enthusiasm for said illegal substances I don't organise a police raid on their house because, and bear with me on this, they're my fucking friends.

Not only do I not know of a place to report him to but also I wouldn't tell you if I did. You sound like a really bad friend and I hope I never have the misfortune of meeting anyone like the sort of person you seem to be in real life. If you are so uptight that you want to ruin your friends life over pirating a fucking video game (when people are caught for piracy and prosecuted it is generally life ruining) you need to seriously rethink your life bro.

What a friend you are.

If I had a friend like you i'd slap the ever living snot out of them.
If I had a friend like you....well I would'nt I dont make friends with people who insult others for asking for advice on a difficult siuation. :)
Just saw this exchange.

If you think that the choice of whether you should report your friend to authorities for some shit like this is a "difficult situation" you don't know what loyalty is. This is no longer a matter of what you seem to be like. That just confirmed it.

By your friends logic, I shall go to the Jaguar car lot in town and take a car off the lot, cause I don't want to pay for a Jaguar and I won't get in any trouble.

No you can't get him in trouble, if it ruffles your feathers this badly, just uninstall the game behind his back.

I don't think it's really right to report your friend over something small like that. Bethesda already have tons of cash. They're not some low level company. Sure,Skyrim is great and in my opinion, is worth every penny, but it's still not worth ratting out your friend. It's just a video game. Just forget about it, it's not worth it.

Well, how about an actual suggestion?

The next time you have to buy him a gift for some reason, buy him Skyrim. It'll make him understand that this is a big issue for you, since you just spent $60 to prove it to him.

This suggestion would work better for a girl/boyfriend or for a family member, but it's an idea.
I like this suggestion. If you guys are close enough friends, you should at least be able to talk about it with him. If not, then why do you care so much more than he does? Do you not want to see him get in trouble, or do you want Bethesda to make more games and show your support? Take a step back and think about it a bit man.

One of my friends pirated Skyrim recently (like a day ago). I am really, really irrated about it, I spent a whole hour almost ranting at him about how cruel it was to Bethesda's workers who poured so much work into the game for him to just pirate it.
He said that he was completely justified in taking it at as he did'nt want to pay for it, which in my opinion is a terrible excuse.

Now I don't hate pirates, some times it is fair. Like situations like no demo, trying before you buy it, it's an EA game(lol half-joke) or it is'nt available anymore to buy; but just taking a product for the sake of WEYHAY FREE SHIT!!111!! just does not sit well with me.

Anyway I need some advice, is their any system that I can report this to secretly? Cause I really think I need to make an example of him, and he is the kind of person that if he does it once an gets away wih it, he will do it again.

So fellow escapists any suggesions?

p.s Don't turn this into a Skyrim vs Oblivion thread plox. WUV U <3

Edit. I don't like the idea of snitching on him but there is no other way I can think of were he would get the message that theiving of deserving companys is unacceptable. I f anyone has a suggestion I would love to know :).
Hey man, don't hate on pirates! They're awesome!

Piracy is a real issue, yeah. It's bad and all that, sure... But to rat on a friend? I mean maybe I was raised differently but where I'm from we would take beatings before ratting out our friends. It's just something we don't do. Never even considered.

You should rethink your loyalties, OP. Not trying to sound like an ass, but it seems yours are Bethesda > Friend.

Just let him know how you feel on the issue and if he wants to be a selfish little shit then he can. You can't control him. You can only control yourself.

My advice? Drop it.
