My little brother's computer recently crapped out. The monitor had the display No signal and such. Wasn't the monitor because I checked it on another computer and it was fine. Was wondering how to check if it's the Motherboard or the Video Card easily?

Well there's no "easy" way to test thoses without specialized equipment. If you have an integrated graphic card on the board you can try unplugging (unslotting actually :p) the video card and run it with the onboard one, obviously if this works your video card is fried.

As far as the board goes, there's not much way to test it "at home" is your computer booting up or beeping when you start it ? (if it's booting up the mb is probably ok)

when powering on do you hear a single beep? that is call a POST beep (Power On Self Test)

If it doesn't beep, then something is wrong with the motherboard.

also you can open the box and see if you have any distended capacitors on the motherboard.

if any capacitor looks like the ones on the left or the right, its a bad motherboard. Also check your video card for any blown capacitors.

does the motherboard have onboard video? if so, you can remove your video card and test the onboard video.

Not sure what happened but I unplugged everything and put it back together. Now it works. Thanks for the tips superbleeder12 and Mekado.

Something could of come unseated or the motherboard could of become 'confused.' You will be surprised how often that happens. Reseating hardware is the very first thing I check, simply cause it is the easiest to do and often 'resets' most problems.

Keep a eye on it though, it can be indication that something is slowly giving and further problems may form. Indeed I have to replace this motherboard sometime because it has failed numerous times to boot up recently and every reset leaves me wondering if I will have to reseat everything again.

It's surprising how just taking something out and replacing it again can fix things.

I had something similar a few months ago. Taking out the 3 cubic feet of dust from my GPU solved it...
