Doom 3, you might want 1 or 2 if you'd rather spend time than money (finding cracks takes time)
Bioshock
Sauerbraten (freeware, google it)
Cube (if you fail at bandwidth and can't get sauer)
Mass Effect games
Sins of a Solar Empire
The Witcher, perhaps...

I have Doom 1, 2 and 3, and while I enjoyed them years ago I prefer a bit more depth to shooter games nowadays, Bioshock is a prime example of a shooter done right imo :p

I'll look into the others though, thanks.

Mass Effect series. PC is better then consoles, and it is a brilliant game
I've got Mass Effect and I didn't particularly like it, it was too short and the side quest offered next to no variety, I'm debating on whether to get Mass Effect 2 or not, the people I know who have it are saying good things.
Mass Effect 2 is much better. I know that the original was bad side quests (which all took place in the same 2 rooms for some weird reason) and poor gameplay held together with some innovative ideas and a brilliant story. ME2 on the other hand has refined its gameplay to come up to standard with most cover based shooters, the only difference being biotic and tech powers, adding a lot more variety. Also, the sidequests are many and varied - I promise you, no more identical rooms or crappy vehicle sections. The only real minus point is the planet scanning crap, but all you really need (on normal difficulty anyway) are the sheild, armour, and cannon upgrades. The rest you can do without, which means almost no time is wasted on that idea by the one rubbish guy at BioWare. If you're unsure play at a friend's house or something, but it is almost worth buying for the story and characters alone, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

If you're a fan of the Diablo series, give Torchlight a try. Great fun. Also, Starcraft 2 is coming out pretty soon, so if you're into Starcraft, you've got that to look forward to. That's an RTS, though. STALKER: SoC is a good FPS/RPG, and it's fantastic if you download the STALKER Complete mod.

If you're interested in FPSes at all, Metro 2033 was great. It's a hardware intensive game, but it's a lot of fun. And obviously if you haven't gotten around to playing Half-Life 2, you absolutely must play that.

I'm not particularly into RTS games but as I mentioned before I have Shadow of Chernobyl and enjoyed it. As I haven't already mentioned I LOVE valve's games to an extent that borders on unhealthy, so I've played through Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and the episodes more times than I care to remember XD

Metro 2033 looks great but I doubt my system would run it with no problems, I'm on an Intel Core 2 Duo with Windows XP, 2GB RAM and a GeForce 9500 GT and it struggles with the higher graphic settings on some older games, so yeah >_<

Have you tried Team Fortress 2? Great game and doesn't get old very quickly. If you haven't played any of the game in The Orange Box, I highly suggest you do that right now.

I've played TF2, but I'm looking for something action/RPG at the moment, as my original post says :p

FO 1 and 2 are cool but they're pretty hard for me to play, not because of difficulty but because they're so dated now, it sucks really. Never tried Diablo though.

Also recommending STALKER and Mass Effect.

Also, I'd like to throw out Sins Of A Solar Empire as an RTS, and Spellforce 2 as a RTS/RPG hybrid.
Yeah I'll have to back you up on this one. Sins of a Solar Empire is pretty awesome. Gets a bit old after a bit, but there are mods.

I'm enjoying Supreme Commander 2 right now. Good RTS. The new Command and Conquer comes out prety soon too, if it's not out already...

Have you tried System Shock 2? If the graphics turn you off, there are a lot of patches/mods that upgrade them

I couldn't actually get that one running on XP, I've been wanting to give it a try for quite some time though. Any idea where I'd be able to pick up a copy for cheap nowadays?

ah, well personally I find it hard to bring myself to play RPGs on anything but handhelds so if you're looking for that I'd suggest you check out the DS's library.
>_< no, I'm not much help for on topic, am I? But anyways, if you can, definitely check out what the DS has because it excels in that category

http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/39-rpg/23613-system-shock-2

check out the rest of the site as well

also, to get SS2 running on XP it requires...meddling. Fortunately, a lot of the patches are available on that website. Also, there's google.
