Why is this surprising? I'm very familiar with traveling around in Florida, or out west and encountering people whom don't even realize that Vermont is a state. Asking: "What state is that in?" When answering where I currently reside. This coming from people residing 'within' the country. I couldn't name half the countries around the world, let alone their individual subdivisions, when it really comes down to it.

That aside, how do you pronounce Arkansas? I've only ever heard it said: R-can-saws

So right, we're driving ok, and I see this sign for some kind of island. But I didn't see any island, even though I suppose I was on a rhode.

@godofcider Always heard it pronounced "ARE kin SAW". But this was flat out just not recognizing the word. She was confused by the presence of the letters 'Ar' before the license plate of a car that was, ostensibly, from Kansas. Hence, head full of fuck.

I once knew someone who didn't know that Tokelau was North East of Fiji and they also didn't know Proxima Centauri is 4.3 light-years away! My GOD! The stupidity!

But jokes aside I believe I would only be able to name about 20 American states. But then again... I'm not American so I have a pretty good excuse.

Can any Non-Australians name all Australian states?

Guess they never learned the state song. They still teach that right? Or maybe they just remembered Alabama, Akaska, Arizona, ummmm... Totally blanking on that fourth one.

This is how I learned all the states and capitols. :)
I can't believe I actually remember that. *Slaps Wakko on the back* Goog job! Don't forget Yakko's very educational...

I thought Arkansas was said phonetically for ages. I am from an entire other country though so it never crossed my mind to care about correctness. I only found out when I discovered there is a little used law that it is actually illegal to mispronounce Arkansas within the borders of Arkansas.

... But then again I've had people who asked my why they named New Jersey "new" and asked me what old jersey was like and if it was a different country (like Mexico and New Mexico).
At the risk of sounding like an idiot, that's how it is named, right?

I've been to Jersey. I assumed the US state New Jersey is named after it?

You realize, of course, that this was none other than an elaborate hoax.

You've been had.

I know people from Arkansas. My mom lived there for a while and my little sister was born there (no birth defects thankfully). It isn't bad, but it isn't great either.

You... Wait... What?

You learn these things. In school. The states...

You're a US citizen yes? You should know all fifty... Not by heart maybe, but given 20 minutes of thought...

Seeing as I border Arkansas, I think I can reasonably state that it is pronounced ar-can-saw. No S at the end.

Tis silent.

I know some states are kind of forgettable (I'm looking at you Maine) but that's ridiculous. Also I won't take the 360, but I'll take whatever games you have.

New South Wales, Tasmania, Queensland, Victory, West, North and South (kind of boring those last three).

I've gotten "New Jersey, is that in New York?" The reverse could at least be somewhat forgivable as there is a West New York, New Jersey.

I tried to be one of them, but they wouldn't let me in their clubhouse. I was too strange for them.

Alabama, and Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas
California, Colorado, Connecticut and more
Delaware, Florida, Georgia, then Hawaii, Idaho
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa ...still 35 to go...
Kansas, and Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine
Maryland, Massachusetts and good old Michigan
Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, and Montana
Nebraska's number 27, number 28's Nevada
Next, New Hampshire, and New Jersey, and way down, New Mexico
There's New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio
Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, now let's see
Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee
Texas and there's Utah, Vermont, I'm almost through
Virginia and there's Washington, and West Virginia, too
Could Wisconsin be the last state or is it 49?
No, Wyoming is the last state in The 50 States That Rhyme!

4th grade, man. Totally awesome year.

It's sad that I'm fourteen years old and recognize the name of every American state (and can name a quarter or even half of them in a minute) but I live in Australia but there are Americans aged 40 who don't even come close.

Also it's sad there are Australians who don't know anything about the Norfolk islands and people in England who don't know what countries the UK consists of or what it means.
(added those last parts so I didn't sound like an American hater)
Welcome to life. The vast majority of people, sheerly by virtue of being people, are staggeringly ignorant. And in this day and age, a large portion of them are that way by choice.
