I once knew someone who didn't know that Tokelau was North East of Fiji and they also didn't know Proxima Centauri is 4.3 light-years away! My GOD! The stupidity!

But jokes aside I believe I would only be able to name about 20 American states. But then again... I'm not American so I have a pretty good excuse.

Can any Non-Australians name all Australian states?
I guess I have to jump on the grenade here..

Australia has states?
Yeap. See some previous posts I jst made. I can't type it agfain

... But then again I've had people who asked my why they named New Jersey "new" and asked me what old jersey was like and if it was a different country (like Mexico and New Mexico). So I can believe it, though doing so makes me want to hit someone with a baseball bat that says common sense.

So yeah. Americans are fucking dumb. This coming from a fellow American.
It is like Mexico and New Mexico, Jersey is a beautiful little island on the English Channel. Much like New York and New England they're named after things over here cause America seems to dislike thinking.
You do realise that it's because the British colonised those places right? Or is my sarcasm detector failing.

Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria always come to mind. Then the directional ones...and maybe Tazmania. The islands get me though.

They speak French, right?

OT: I've had plenty of people asking me where Russia is and what language they speak in the Russia. Including a teacher... /facepalm

You learn these things. In school. The states...

You're a US citizen yes? You should know all fifty... Not by heart maybe, but given 20 minutes of thought...

Seeing as I border Arkansas, I think I can reasonably state that it is pronounced ar-can-saw. No S at the end.

Tis silent.
In school? Ya...kind of like 'teach the controversy' eh? Or how about the recent rewriting of the history textbooks in Texas, which obviously doesn't only influence Texas. >_> That's borderline, if not, the equivalent of Japanese textbooks.

Pronunciation of Arkansas- Huh, undoubtedly a regional thing.

I once told someone on Xbox Live that I lived in Wyoming. They replied "Wyoming, Michigan?" I had to explain that there was a state called Wyoming AND a town in Michigan by the same name. He didn't believe me that Wyoming was a state and told me that the town was too small to separate from Michigan and form it's own state.

@godofcider Always heard it pronounced "ARE kin SAW". But this was flat out just not recognizing the word. She was confused by the presence of the letters 'Ar' before the license plate of a car that was, ostensibly, from Kansas. Hence, head full of fuck.
Lol, I'm an Australian, I thought Arkansas was different to "Arkensaw". Thought they were two different places, but I knew Arkansa was a state, just was reading the pronounciation in my head incorrectly.
I never studied geography though and have never been to the United States.

Well Australia is actually an Island. But the only Island that is it's own state is Tasmania, which you go so well done! The rest are all part of the state to who's coast they are nearest.

I'd say cool story bro, but that was actually pretty funny. Kudos for worldwide ignorance of the great state of Arkansas.

But the little girls know it all the time. Hannah Montana

If anything, Connecticut or South Dakota are the most forgettable
I would say North Dakota. It has no real landmarks or major cities. At least South Dakota has Mount Rushmore. If it wasn't for Fargo (great movie) nobody would know about North Dakota, not even the people living there.

Wha-- I just....nevermind, that just seems bizarre. We're talking about the original settlers here, before the USA even existed. English people naming places after their homes, then becoming American over the generations.

Recent rewriting of history textbooks?

Psh.

Dude, my textbook has got to be twenty years old. At least. I don't think it's been recently edited.

I was drunk when I wrote both of those comments, but still, the person who made the original point of someone thinking that New Jersey was named after Jersey was stupid might have English roots, but by god are we pleased that he's American rather than English.

Ahahaha that's hilarious. Me and my friend named every state in America on Friday, and we're English. It's simply amazing how some Americans are highly educated and fundamental to the advance of western society, and there are those who can't point to America on a map. Must be something wrong with the education system or something.
