I've never played deus ex, but i still enjoy daggerfall, and other old games, like the old dos tsr games, and i do enjoy half-life. so, is deus ex 1, on steam, right for me? should i get it? is it worth it, just for the experience?

If you can deal with the fact that the Graphics are VERY old (now about 11 years old), then absolutely, it's one of the best games ever made. Still, if you haven't played it, I'd recommend Human Revolution, it's a fantastic game, and since it's the prequel to Deus Ex, story-wise it would actually make sense to play it first.

Well, unless there is some compatibility or other reason to get it on steam, you could probably find it a lot cheaper elsewhere. Outside of that, yes.

Deus Ex 1 is a good game story wise. The only reason I can't get into it now is because of looks (I Don't know why, I love the game, just can't get past the graphics now)

Yeeeep.

I believe there are 4 games everyone should own.

Deus Ex.
Morrowind.
Saints Row.
and Diablo.

It's brilliant. Download the fan-made HD tweak and texture pack, it does make a bit of a difference. Deus Ex looks dated, but the gameplay and story are as fresh as ever. It's a game that is a joy to play, and it also makes you think. Plus, you get to see how games since have been influenced by it. Win all round.

Bear in mind I'm the sort of nutter who still plays Angband, my view on things might be somewhat skewed (and I'd probably throw a Planescape: Torment or a Civilisation 2 in there) but even so, I'd agree with you on the first two. Still, you're opening a can of worms there, matey!

Storywise, it's pretty good, though I could never finish it because gameplay is mostly crap. It really hasn't aged well. And that comes from a guy who still genuinely enjoys Half-Life 1 and the original Fallouts.

so basically, if i like sci-fi, and daggerfall, will i like this?
Yes. It's actually fairly similar to Daggerfal in that it has fairly clunky first-person gameplay which provides you with a massive box of tricks to use. It's not open world like Daggerfall and the maaps are carefully designed puzzles with lots of routes through them instead of the sprawling labyrinths that Daggerfall had. But now that I think about the basic gameplay it actually quite similar.

is it immersive? how many hours gameplay, approx?
Yes, very immersive. It's an immersive sim ala Thief, so that's kinda the whole point. It's a 20-30 hour game depending on how much exploring you do. I can't recommend it enough, but keep in mind that a lot of people give up on the first level. Liberty Island doesn't cut you any slack, so it can be frustrating until you get the hang of how the game works.

I played Deus Ex for the first time just a few weeks ago, and I'd only recommend it if you're prepared to give it a *LOT* of chances to impress you. If you're patient enough to let it get going the gameplay and story become fairly compelling, but quite frankly it doesn't even come close to living up to the reputation it's built up over the years.

The gameplay and graphics are as unpolished as I've ever seen in any game, and while many of the environments are as good as you've heard in terms of non-linearity most of the other aspects of the game are way below par. Most of the game mechanics (excluding level design) are frankly pretty awful, with embarrassingly poor AI demanding special mention, but I have to admit the gestalt of the experience is better than that assessment makes it sound.

The story, however, is nowhere near as good as they say. The plot, like the gameplay, is good enough to become compelling after you've put in a dozen hours or so, but never really excels. The way the story is told is incredibly ham handed, you get so much of it from the bad guys calling you and just telling you their plans that there were a few hours around two thirds of the way in where I literally thought my character had been mind-controlled and was receiving orders a la Bioshock (which in my opinion was a huge missed opportunity, it would have fit the game'e tone like a glove). It had a few neat ideas and it was well paced, but I never actually found myself particularly caring about any of the characters (though I did feel a certain spiritual kinship with J.C. Denton when Agent Navarre commented on the inadequacy of his cochlea. I don't know why that is.) I honestly don't see where the people who call it the best game story ever are coming from, it's good to be sure but never really reaches beyond that.

In summary, I would recommend it if you've got enough patience to wrestle it to the ground and force it to be compelling. It doesn't start well and it has a lot of problems throughout but winds up being rewarding in the end if you make it far enough. The reputation it's built (and Miracle of Sound's The New Black Gold playing in the background) was enough to impel me to keep at it until it engaged me, and engage me it did, but it was a lot of work to get to that point.

I include Saints Row and Diablo to fill the quota, that way you have every type of game you need to survive.

Deus Ex: Semi-Linear RPG
Morrowind: Open World RPG
Saints Row: Overly Violent shooter to d*ck around in.
Diablo: l00t l00t l00t! <3

In fact, the only games i plan to purchase the next few months are Deus Ex: HR, Skyrim, Saints Row the Third, and Diablo 3.
