Never saw the sun today. Or the clouds. Just the darkness.

Winter is lovely. Cold weather, snow, a nice warm house to stand as contrast...

But sometimes days like today happen. Last night I was on the phone with a friend...and she kept me talking until almost 6 AM. Meaning I got to sleep a few minutes before it got light out. Right at the front end of the day, in fact.

And this being Saturday and me being inclined to sleep in, I slept for a good eleven hours. Woke up at 5 PM. Opened my eyes a few minutes after it got dark out. Right at the back end of the day, in fact.

Of course this also means that by the time I get to sleep in the evening (especially if the insomniac friend in question calls again at some late hour and keeps me talking to her until sunrise again), I'll have spent something on the order of my last 24 waking hours in darkness for having slept clean through the day. While I'm not really prone to seasonal depression, this can't be good for my mental health (and I might want to get my hands on a Vitamin D supplement!)

For Discussion: Ever sleep clean through a day? I imagine those of you further north (in places like Alaska, Canada, Sweden, Scotland...) are more likely to say yes to this than those of us in lower latitudes, but I'm curious to know if there are any other would-be Draculas on the forum here.

Yes, I have, and yes, I'm from Canada. For just over a calendar year I lived in Saskatoon, Canada, which is pretty damn north by global standards. That winter didn't have a lot of light, maybe only 7 hours per day in January. I was working midnights, too, so I had a lot of days where I didn't see the light.

Living in a bleeding tropical country it is kind of hard for me to sleep all through daytime, though I would certainly love to.
I don't know why but I can't stand clarity, especially sunlight (nothing against artificial lights, so long as it is not in excess).

I did that for black friday. I was up doing stuff til 6am, and I went home and slept til roughly 9pm.

After waking up I proceeded to sparkle and date a bland emotionless girl.

I slept until 4 today. Kind of why I'm up now. Bad times. Things at night tend to be for more solitary pursuits.

People from Scandinavia will surely be shaking their heads while reading this, mumbling something along the lines of: "Pffff....lightweight"

No air cons? I love sleeping through days with an air con on, it sort of sucks all the energy out of you and sleeping feels awesome. I'm from Europe though, didn't grow up with them, so maybe that's why.

I've easily slept like 25-30 hours straight.

I'm noctournal; I sleep clean through EVERY day. I get most of my vitamin D from Ovaltine.

Well, air cons surely help me sleep, I mean, I live in Rio de Janeiro and I have trouble sleeping in hot environments (if I do I sleep terribly, have horrible nightmares and wake up covered in sweat).

Also, 25-30 hours straight? Were you in a coma or something? My personal record is 17 hours straight, and NOT EVEN THEN I managed to skip sunlight.

not unless I'm really sick. Last year, I woke up with a bag fever at 5 in the morning, fell asleep at about 7, and woke up at 11 p.m. feeling horrid, but well-rested.

Hehe, yeah I pretty much live my entire life this way. I have DSPS (Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome) so my internal body clock is always shifted about 4 hours later than normal people's. I sleep from around 5 AM to 2 PM or later which means that in the winter I go to bed in the dark and wake up in the dark. I live in Norway, btw, so this is common. I like it though, I enjoy the dark and a classmate of mine is convinced I was a vampire in a past life (yeah...she's one of THOSE).

I almost did it in the summer, two years ago. I would sleep for a little over 12 hours each day, and be awake for 12, so I eventually got to the point where I would wake up before dinner and go to sleep before breakfast (on my parent's schedule, anyway). I'm getting closer to doing it this Thanksgiving (I woke up at like 1), but fortunately I only sleep for 9 hours now (went to sleep at 5:30 this morning).

Around Christmas 2 years ago, I got the flu, just kept sleeping and sleeping, woke up occasionally to get a drink of water and some paracetamol. Fortunately, this spanned for only 3 days.

I love those days.

It feels like the world stopped moving for a moment.
As if everyone just stood still or were moving outside the tranquillity of your own house.

One would call it wasting the day, I would call it full enjoyment and rest.

*phone call*
NO I DON'T WANT TO GO OUT,
I'M HAVING A PEACEFUL MOMENT HERE!
*hangs up*

ahhhh.....that's the life.

(ofcourse this loses it's charm if done repeatedly)

You know, I had never heard of this disorder before you mentioned it, but it sounded just enough like my sleep schedule to do a quick check of wikipedia; it actually looks quite a bit like me, although I'm not stupid enough to go and diagnose myself with it. It's still interesting...

OT: When I get sick, I tend to do nothing but sleep, so I'm sure there have been days when I've only seen a minute or two of sunlight. Living in Florida, there's enough daylight year round that this is pretty hard to do, so even with me staying up til 2-4 AM and getting up between Noon and 3 PM on a regular basis, I'm not really likely to sleep through the sunlight without being sick or otherwise laid up in bed.

Yeah, I thought the same for a few years. Oh, it's probably something I'll grow out of or just that once I get into the natural rhythm it'll be fine, but it started messing up my school schedule really bad, so I went to a sleep analyst person who monitored by sleep for about a week and diagnosed me proper. It's nice though, gives me an excuse to have my exams later in the day than most people.

I got some bad news for you...you don't outgrow it. I've suffered DSPS all my life and I'm 33. I'm the consummate night owl. Back when I was married my ex-wife was good about regulating my sleep cycle with a combination of "get your butt to bed" and frequent sex (which is the best remedy for DSPS known to man.) Since the divorce that remedy's been far less frequent.

A few summers ago I became nocturnal for a while. Went to bed at 5 am, woke up damn near 5 pm.

When school let back in, trying to get back on a schedule was horrible.
