Yes, I played fable 1 for hundreds of hours, the only other game I have hundreds of hours in is Fallout 3, oh and mass effect one, that was a great game, I need to buy another copy I lost my disk, then got the XBL version, but neeed to uninstall it, should be cheap by now.. Oblivion was good, but most of the time wasnt fun or memorable so I dont include it, as it was walking in copy/paste dungeons, I dont like oblivion much an more. But yeah, most modern games lack replay value.
Yes, Fable was quite the achievement. Somehow it was great despite its flaws. Fable 2 fellated donkeys, but whatever. Mass Effect 1&2 were "separate but equal" works of art. I've probably clocked about 100 myself on ME1; there's actually replay value in that game. Still sitting on an unopened copy of Fallout 3 because of Oblivion stinking so much. Oblivion's painful "scaling" ruined it and it should have been more Morrowindy.

There have been some great games in recent years, it's just a matter of doing research, never believing official reviews (I learned this when I got Oblivion), checking review average sites, checking user reviews, and even a bit of listening to Yahtzee.

And using the FF series as a yardstick is a big mistake. They've been coasting on hype and rep for years and providing NOTHING to back it. Wacky, strangely sexual characters come SECOND, gameplay comes first.

Most of my favorite games of all time are fairly recent ones. Fallout 3, Saints Row 2, Red Dead Redemption, Final Fantasy XII and the Katamari games.

The oldest game I'd put in my top 10 (at #2) is Castlevania:SOTN.
I'm just the opposite. Nothing post-PS2 makes my top five.
You have my pity.

Graphics are just selling points to games, of course in some games they are needed...I think the cool scenes in mass effect 2 wouldnt have been as good 8bit.

They do put a lot into razzle-dazzle.
But I don't think it's fun they're getting rid of, it's difficulty. Games are to easy now!

Nope. That's just nostalgia, sir, and your fine memories of playing those games before.

Sure, there are loads of games that still hold up today and will hold up for many more, but, the truth is, if you put a person with no gaming beckground whatsoever and show him, let's say, the NES Bionic Commando and Just Cause 2, I'm fairly sure the latter one will be better.
that's not fair, Bionic Commando sucked.

Put him up with Just Cause 2 and Super Mario Land 3, and then lets see.

In JRPGs, certainly, but in everything else, not necessarily. Fallout 3's VATS system was all about spectacle, and somehow managed to build a game out of it. It's not the spectacle that's the problem, it's just being applied poorly. Turn-based RPGs aren't a genre you can easily base around spectacle without making the player feel like an unnecessary addition to the gameplay. FF13 was an absolute piece of shit, mostly due to completely cutting off the player from having any input on the combat, cutscenes, story, or really anything. You can literally win the game using nothing other than the X button and control stick, barring the occasional switch to a different paradigm.

No worries. Someday, someone will pity you in turn.
