Yep, a new book in the horrendous and abuse-glorifying 50 Shades trilogy is being released the 18th of June. It's called Grey and retells the story from Christian's point of view. because apparently, we didn't have enough people in the world calling abuse "romantic." (and no, I'm not referring to the BDSM part.) Read more about it here [http://www.people.com/article/fifty-shades-of-grey-el-james-new-book-christian-perspective] if you want to ruin your evening.

(My mom was stuck in an incredibly abusive relationship with my dad for twelve years, so yes, I'm allowed to have this kind of tone against somebody who romanticizes it.)

Isn't using Christian's point of view defeating the entertainment side of the novel? Seriously, the narration of the woman is incredibly hilarious and now they're taking it away.

Oh great, now CollegeHumor need to redo their sketch from years ago, except this time with a female voiceover. Say, which actress working right now could produce the most ear-splitting shrieks imaginable?

Shit... when I start to think about it, imagining the author writing from a man's perspective raises some truly hellish passages in my mind. I mean "My Immortal" levels of bad. The kind of bad that'll make you want to swallow a kettle of sulphuric acid.

Come on now why do you need to harp on peoples spank material, I'm pretty sure there would be plenty to say if someone went through your browsing history...
So have some common decency and let people get their freak on in their spare time.

People can sue whatever they like as spank material. The problem is when a manipulative person like Christian is widely regarded as a romantic ideal. It's one thing to enjoy The Great Dictator. It's another to want to vote for Adenoid Hynkel.

So, she basically just stole Stephenie Meyer's idea (again) of remaking the first Twilight book from Edward's point of view?

Yep! At least she didn't call it "Shades at Midnight" or something.

From what I understood from honest trailers the film/book is incredibly light with abusive and doesn't even reach of the kinky shit there are, no?
I'm not talking about the BDSM when I talk about the abuse, I'm talking about the relation dynamics.

(Hm... What We Talk About When We Talk About Abuse... There's a Raymond Carver story waiting to be written.)

"Christian is a complex character," said James in a press release, "and readers have always been fascinated by his desires and motivations, and his troubled past.
Are they really using the troubled past trope as an excuse for someone acting like a dick? I've never read the books, thank Spaghetti Monster for that, but from the above posts I can guess this Christian is pretty much the antagonist of the book.

I hate how close that guys name is to mine.

Is he really regarded as a romantic ideal, though? Or is he just a romantic fantasy? (I don't know, I haven't read it and only know a single person who has and she didn't come across as somebody who suddenly thought abuse wasn't abuse) Lots of media-icons are halfheartedly looked up to. Doesn't mean people actually want to be like those people. They just like the fantasy for a couple of moments.

From what I read in your link and the stories i've heard I understand why you don't like it but I'm just not convinced this is worth getting too upset about. Oh no, somebody ineptly wrote some novels with bad charactars and a poor understanding of the issues involved. Everybody panic.

I'm not sure I get what's the difference between a romantic ideal and a romantic fantasy. Please explain.

Also, the problem here is that it's having such a huge impact on our culture, and subsequently, on what people think is romantic. We're affected by what we read.

An 'ideal' implies something you actually want, while a 'fantasy' is just something you like to think about. Lots of people are into some really hardcore fantasies, but I doubt that they'd want those as their 'ideal' real-world situation.

At least, that's my interpretation.

Well 50 Shades was originally a Twilight fanfic. So is it really any surprise?

A romantic ideal is something you would actually want.

A fantasy is different. Some people find rape fantasies attractive. Those same people don't want to experience actual rape.

Ah, but you'd hope the people indulging in such knew the difference. Apparently a lot of people are trying what they think is BDSM based on the books, and doing it dangerously wrong.

Not to mention the massive increase in people having to be rescued from being handcuffed to beds in the UK.

You would, but if the people in question were that sensible then they probably wouldn't be reading 50 Shades in the first place. Never said people were particularly smart about either their ideals or their fantasies. Nor are all ideals/fantasies healthy. There's just a line between the two.

I find it rather funny that this bed thing is an epidemic, though.
