Am looking forward (kinda) to this I remember in 2009 on there website said ready 2009 new years eve was a long day then nothign for what seemed an ice age odd things here and there but nothign really substantial.

Seems more is getting out there about it. The honeymoon is over am afraid I know its free and the team have done it all in there spare time but really i dont know if i care that much about it now. Its what ZEN looks like that interest me

Graphics look extremely good for a DIY mod, but the sound is fucking atrocious on nearly every front. Whoever is in charge of audio direction should immediately be put to pasture. The voice acting is abysmal, proper cringeworthy with it failing even at slapstick humour, never mind intelligent satire. Abject failure. This is without getting to volume balancing, acoustics, music, individual hit sounds, effects, etc.

What the fuck is up with sprint and slower overall movement speed to boot? Do they think a console release is imminent? No electrocution damage either.

Overall, 5/10 (9 for graphics, minus points for sound and middling gameplay issues). The most worrying thing are the comments from the project lead, hopefully in poor full damage control but it seems he genuinely thinks that the audio quality is comparable to the work they've done on the visuals and should not be criticised. If Black Mesa ever gets released and the audio is still awful I may attempt to fix it myself, it would be criminal to leave it in that sorry state.

So they changed a couple things - so what? They're allowed to! If people want the original Half Life with updated graphics they can just go play Half Life Source. The makers said long ago that they weren't making a straight up remake.

So Black Mesa is not a game? You know the cynics amongst us have been saying that for some time, aka vapourware.

Of course they are, if things were the same as the original Half Life nobody would give a monkey's and the mod wouldn't exist at all. Nobody has a problem with change for the better.

If people want the original Half Life with updated graphics they can just go play Half Life Source.

Have you played HS:L? It's barely updated from the original, it has built-in widescreen support and Source water but everything else, including textures, are the same.

Exactly! Which is why when you court the gaming media and public, show off teasers promising quality/originality, and release periodic statements to the effect that it's going to be the dog's danglies/be patient - you can expect people to call out bullshit when they see it. Much of the criticism is totally just and irrefutable, the price alone does not automatically exempt a commodity from criticism.

No I did not realize this. I see now that it's just a mod. I haven't been following this at all so honestly I just thought that the title of the mod was a code name for a new Half Life game. My mistake.

Gunplay looks tedious, as does the AI.

The audio is turrible.
