Call me a cynic, but the first thing that came to mind after seeing the new layout was: "Now you have to click five times to see all the categories. That also means five reloads. Ergo, they did it to quintuple the main page ad revenue."
Otherwise the overhaul doesn't seem that radical. There are a few aesthetic problems every here and there, but nothing major.
