Just purchased myself a new computer case and sound card. As soon as I opened the packaging I got a whiff of that wonderful smell that all new computer parts have. If you have ever smelt it you would know what I mean.

Tell me Escapists. Do you love new computer part smell too? Any ideas what causes it? I have a feeling its the packaging or maybe the coating on circuit boards. What do you think?

Most importantly, however, does it come in an aerosol so my room can smell like it?

I can't vouch for new computer part smell, I've never bought a separate part for a computer, but new game and game manual smell is just fantastic. *sniffs point lookout expansion that just arrived in the mail*

If you find an aerosol of "Eau de Neuf" please do let me know.

It's the smell of unused 1s and 0s!

I personally prefer the scent of new books, that's just a great smell.

Hmm new books do smell great... So do magazines.. The weekly free student magazine at my University normally has some mention of the smell in the letters section most weeks..

The smell is a mixture of flux acid, etching acid, industrial detergent used to scrub the PCB and the oxidising smell of the copper. Also that will be mixed with the inks used in the paper and card. Don't let that destroy the magic though! Etch tanks and solder were the smells of my school years, beautiful smells!
It does kinda remind me of the electronics room from when I was at school. But the electronics room had more of an old computer smell. Dust, copper and aluminium dust, the etching acid, drain cleaner and damp carpet (from exploded capacitors not actual damp carpet). Definitely something similar there.

I love that smell. I can actually imagine it right now. I think it's partly physical but mostly just the smell of euphoria. No idea what actually causes it, I just know it goes away after it's been used for a while. Sadly.
