Now being a fan of the Devil May Cry series, my initial reaction to Ninja Theory's version of Dante was similar to the hatred people have whenever the Westboro Church arrives in their town. Alright that might be a bit excessive but I was not happy at all with how Dante looked and his personality change such as the smoking. However, over time, I've actually begun enjoying the trailers and gameplay footage that's being released; obviously I find some aspects to still be worrying but Ninja Theory is starting to prove to me that they may be able to do something good here.
First of all, anyone who blames Ninja Theory for the new look for Dante, I'm just letting you know that Capcom was the one who wanted to "Westernize" Dante in order for Western audiences to like him more. This plan backfired and it turned out that NT actually wanted to create a Devil May Cry sequel. So I'm not hating on NT here but I don't think their track record is that good; Heavenly Sword was, imo, shit and Enslaved had some good writing and good casting with Andy Serkis but the gameplay was terrible.
In this trailer, it's shown that the gameplay, that previously looked clunky and unresponsive, has been tweaked and actually looks much faster. I was worried about the emphasis on aerial combat but that seems to be not that important. The voice acting for Dante is actually pretty good except the girl he's with is a bit bland and seems to be there solely for exposition but we haven't seen anything of her yet. The graphics on the other hand look pretty bad; not the environments or the art design, they look fantastic but the faces of the characters and the textures are pretty low-res. At Gamescon there were reports of considerably low frame rate drops and since the game is running at 30 FPS, I'm hoping they're fixing this problem. Overall, the game seems to be improving and I'm glad; any DMC fan should at least rent it to see how it is. The story seems interesting except having Dante as a terrorist is something I'm not really excited about seeing as that word is being thrown around everywhere.
