They wouldn't deliberately cast someone without thinking he was going to be good in the role would they? Fucks sakes.
Whilst I hate to say it...Bonnie Langford as Mel? or Adric... There have been one or two choice fluffs in the past; but I'm still saying he should be good.
Those were cast by the old series people. I believe hes referring to this new generation under Russell T Davies, which has been spectacular.
Russell T is leaving with David Tennant, it's not his show anymore..

God damn it, people! Where do you get off on saying "he doesn't look like a Doctor" or "He looks like a fag"? Daniel Craig didn't look like James Bond, and his sexuality was in question in how he looked when being cast, but he turned out to be one of the best, if not the best, James Bonds. As for the "too young" argument...correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it just another face on the same character? Why is it believable that Tennant lived hundreds of years, but this guy didn't? He doesn't look that much younger, I'd guess 20 years difference, maybe. Certainly not enough to make hundreds of years vanish. I'm not a Doctor Who fanboy (I was watching them till Youtube took down the Doctor Who episodes) and with unappeasable fans like you guys, I don't care about that anymore.

If anyone wants to see anything Matt's done previously, he was in the adaptation of Philip Pullman's Ruby in the Smoke and Shadow in the North. He was the reporter guy if i remember rightly.

Seriously people, there's no point in getting worked up until you've seen the first episode. I made my mistake with David Tennant, I thought he'd be a horrible Doctor and he turned out to be my favourite second only to Tom Baker. I'm a huge Doctor Who fan but I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about Matt Smith... As Cahlee said, Doctor Who has been on 30-40 years and they haven't once chosen a bad Doctor. Granted, that could go tits up at any moment but just give him the benefit of the doubt before flying off the handle.

I think Steven Moffat wrote better episodes of Dr Who then Russel T Davies, I mean it's my opinion at least. Seeing as how good episodes such as "Blink" and the only good episodes of series 4 in the giant library planet were, I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do with an entire series. I also wonder who the next companion will be, if anyone.

Half of the people decrying him now were saying the same thing about David Tennant, and he wound up being awesome, even despite having to act out RTD's atrocious excuses for storylines.

This guy won't even have the RTD hurdle to overcome, since they've handed the show to Moffat. Steven Moffat, the best writer of the new series and one of the best in the history of the show.

So... That guy.

He won't take over until 2010 it says, that means a whole solid year of arguing before we can even see the first episode.

You think we can keep the thread going for that long?
Oh, this crowd will manage that.

As a matter of interest, was David Tennant known before he became the doctor? Also, what is he Doctor of?

David Tennant wasn't all that well known as an actor outside of theatre. He frequently performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company (which he recently returned to with Hamlet) but only really broke out on TV in 2004 with Blackpool, and the following year with Casanova, written by Russell T Davies. This probably got RTD's attention and led to his casting, at which point he became huge. Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_tennant] has a not unsurprising list of everything he's done.

And he's a Doctor of... everything.

As for Matt Smith... I've not seen him in anything except the Special he was revealed in, but I'll wait and see. If you can track that special down (Doctor Who Confidential, 'The Eleventh Doctor') and just watch him there, you can see there's definitely something about him. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt - Steven Moffat wouldn't have picked him if he wasn't right for the part.

Are you people really dismissing him because of his hair?
Yes. Yes we are. A person with such a douchy hairstyle could not play an eccentric character like the Doctor well.
I'm guessing you haven't seen him in anything there. I'm confident he'll be good. Although, David Tennant has left some pretty huge shoes behind.

You mean the shoes he couldn't fill left by #9? No offense to Tennant's acting, but Chris E is the best doctor IMO. Nobody could fill those clown shoes.

I think Christopher Eccleston was very good, but perhaps a bit too serious for the show.

Just to make sure... you are being ironic there deliberately, right?

Do you really think THESE guys could?

Those pictures prove my point, if anything. The doctor is the type to not care about his appearance. The doctor doesn't spend his mornings working on his hair.
