I am working on some new (small time) games. It occurred to me that I have no artistic talent. I am aware that this lacking on my part my not have spread to rest of the gaming community. So in an effort to make something presentable and while remaining within my budget ($0) I am looking for people to help create me some concept art via this string.

The first project is based on a race type in a new space game I am developing. I know a space game how original, but we all got to start somewhere.

It is a race of intelligent robots, that where originally created and went out on their own?basically involving a lot of bloodshed. They all start out the same but then seek to modify themselves to appear unique. I would appreciate art from anyone.
Thanks.

If you can program the game, you should have no shortage of artists or writers throwing themselves at a chance to put a game down on their resume. There are website for it.

Well, I am leading up to being able to create better and better games, so right now its all just for a bit of fun. So I thought I would give the bored artists of the escapists network something to do.

Well, I can't draw, but if you give me details of what you're thinking for art I can come up with a good idea.

You would be suprised how often programmers find them selves resorting to ugly or pirated place holder art because they can't find any one to take up the art task. Anyway with regard to the OP are you looking for concept art, sprites, or 3d modles? Usualy when asking for art it helps to be more specific. That way the artists don't get discouraged when their artistic vision does not match your own.

I'm only in my first year of studying games design so I may not be as skilled as you hope, but you have my pledge to help :)

In addition to looking for other people to do my drawing for me I am also looking for input on what makes a space game a joy to play. What would you like to see in it?

Well, I am trying to keep the premise of the art pretty generic to allow for the most artisic freedom.

Well, I'm an idea guy. I can't draw, but I can still come up with something that looks good.

Freedom, but not falsified vastness *cough* Mass Effect *cough*. If you're making a space game, how about centering it around a single planet or station, and making that planet/station highly detailed? Instead of just tossing a shallow but massive universe at the players, give them a single intricate location.

How about an expanding world? One that continues to grow and change overtime. I agree that many games consist of false vastness. If they wanted to look at art the gamer would go to a museum. The gamer wants something they can interact with. Each object is something that can be manipulated. Such design would take time to become truly vast, so I suggest the expanding world where new locations become discovered as the game updates.

Sound good?

Why not do simple geometric shapes for your robots and make them transform when they're threatened or need to interact with something, like so:

You wouldn't be buried under super-complex art, plus it would make it easier for them to do infiltration jobs and so forth, esp. if some of the robots disguise themselves as "ordinary" items.

I was just trying to think of something that wasn't re-purposed insect or squid shapes. That's Been Done.

Edit: Plus, do the robots share a hive mind or do they have a culture? If they start out as mass-manufacture in a creche plant, there might be a lot of cultural significance attached to things like Authentic Battle Damage or at least visible repairs. There may be a cultural split where the new robots like to get bright shiny mods installed, but the older robots think this is "ricey" and prefer to only get modded when they actually get damaged.

They also may have a form of Social Darwinism to try and improve the programming of newer robots, where only individuals who have gone out on dangerous missions and survived are allowed to transfer their programming to the latest generation.

You could do lots of odd things with the concept.

Second Edit: You could also do something where infiltrator robots like to get Space Station decals (you know, like the old city stickers they'd put on your luggage when you traveled?) as a Status Symbol. It just strikes me as amusing to run across a scary laser-shooting robot that's covered in "Delta Phi Station, Home of Freeze-Dried Apple Pie!".

Okay, I'll stop now. :D

Hmm...I can maybe get down a few ideas for robots and post them up. But what exactly are you look for? Do you want them to look Aggressive? Intelligent? Humonoid? Alien? Cartoony? Realistic? Steampunk? Modern? Big? Small? Do they like buns?

Or do you just want general robots and want to pick something out? I can do that to.

Yeah I know what you mean. Why must you so quickly dash my dreams of more transformers? :(
I think I know what he's getting at, I'm probably better off helping at stages past art: my hint is that I hadn't touched an art pad for say about 9 years til i started this degree. Been told that I'm a natural, though. I'll do what I can =) If there's any specifics you have, tell me, otherwise prepare to be disgusted by my brutally gorey mind of killer robots

Hmmmm... I see this becoming something of a community-wide game-creation effort.... *Strokes chin*

These are all great idea's. I espicially like the decals idea. But yes they will vary much as humans very, from aggresive to almost childish in appearence. However I want them to contain some main features. Namely eyes, and limbs, legs, tracks or some way of mobility.
