To my shame I only got into gaming about a year after the Xbox came out and I have no clue how I could be nostalgic over any games Ive played so itll be interesting to see what comes.

To this day independent people make 2D games filled with fun, fresh and new ideas. Well, maybe its not new, but how many of you have played Cave Story? Its a classic 2D side scroller I played a while back that I love regardless of near never feeling nostalgic about it- its not a big name game, no one talks about it, so how can I?

Cave Story isn't the best example. I think the release date is actually, pretty far back. What that doesn't change is the fact that if I found the game today, downloaded and played it, it would go to my top 10 best games ever like it is now. If I found Metroid today? Metal Slug today? The old Ghost's n' Goblins today? I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt I'd play them for barely minutes before quitting. Nostalgia is not something you should be factoring in when playing a game; if your forced to remember the good old days while you play in the new ones just to have a good time, then you DO need to go back to the old games. Being Nostalgic is not what games should be about.

No, the kids of today will not know the joy the Nintendo brought to people throughout the 90's. I fail to see why that's a bad thing. I mean, can you expect them to know what it was like to hear about the advent of the telephone? They either weren't born or had just learned how to eat food in a manner that prevents it from leaking out of your mouth. Trust me, I'm part of this category.

But does the Wii not cause the same joy? Do they not experience the same feeling when they hear of a new Playstation? Is the Xbox 360 really so bad? I don't mean to cause offence, but I do believe you're over-reacting.

My niece and nephew are now in their early teens, while I'm of the NES generation.

However, they appreciate Super Mario 3 and Super Tennis (!) all the same. Pixel art is hot among many teens; in fact I've seen a sort of 80's nostalgia among the 90's generation akin to the 70's nostalgia among those born in the 80's. If trends are anything to go by, the 00 generation could be even more 80's nostalgic. The 60's are still huge in many circles of people born in the 70's and 80's. Maybe '98 will be to future gamers what '68 is to psychedelic kids today; just have a look at the games released: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_in_video_gaming

I think some games will stand the test of time regardless.

Even though I'm young, I never really got the latest games, so I still love the old'uns. 2D Sonic and Tiny Tunes on Sega Mega Drive and Super Mario on the NES.

I don't know where these consoles are now; we probably gave them to my seven-year-old cousin. I think that was a waste because he prefers his PS3.

Not to say I don't like the new games, graphics and stories, I just miss the old ones.
