What we need to make things orginal again is to stop copying the winner and to take a chance with something new.

Gamers standards are so bloody high these days, they need something new with every single game that comes out, I suppose its understandable but it makes it very difficult for developers to create anything original.

I do hope you're joking that there's a game of the movie of the game coming out.

Well honestly it depends on how narrow you're getting with this. Are we talking basic genres or other aspects. For example, if you want to talk basic concepts, ever playformer could be called a rippoff of some of the first platformers like Pitfall. And every dungeon crawler game could be considered a rippoff of Adventure.

So with that in mind, what is considered innovation within the same genre of game, if you consider it possible to make innovation in an existing genre. The story? The items? The small gimmicks?

Personally, I just care about a game being enjoyable to play with an interesting story.

It is difficult to come up with an original idea.
The problem is now that video games are a million dollar industry, with huge budgets spent on them.
Who is going to take a chance on a wacky, original idea? nobody!
Gone are the days of bedroom programmers churning out games on cassette and thus originality.

XBL attempts to address the problem with Indy designers, but the good games are still few and far between.

In a sense the gamer themselves have killed the market, demanding more content, more of everything. (just check this forum, most of the posts here are people complaining about something to do with a game.)
Its just safer for a designer to churn out CoD every year and perhaps try new ideas then take the flak for the small things than to think outside of the box.

Technically no. But there is a tie-in game coming out around the same time as the movie set between Sands of Time and Warrior Within called The Forgotten Sands. I'm not sure about it being exactly the same some of the powers are different

Well the Forgotten Sands is coming out around about the same time as the movie. But Its not based on the movie.

Don't go hoping for a new idea. New ideas rarely make as much money as sequels and blatant copies which is why the closest you get to original ideas are all flash games or console market place games. Notice there is a Portal and a Bioshock sequel.

Portal was insanely innovative in that it gave us a new look at the first person genre, something Mirror's Edge tried to do as well. Bioshock brought back immersive story even though it was only an average shooter. And instead of letting these trophies lay, we brought 'em back to reuse. I'm not saying I'm not going to buy Portal 2 the day it comes out, but frankly, it's a business. Most are in it to make money, not to make art.

There hasn't been an original game idea in ages. Seriously. It kind disheartening to see that most game developers are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I mean, after you have "Mario in Space", what do you really have left? Everything has been done to death.
That's because all of the younger 3pd's are content with rehashing the same stupid engines and concepts over and over again. Of course, that isn't much different from the golden days of the S/NES when damn near 1/3 of the games were platform clones that were desperately trying to be the next Mario.

The game is what happens between Sands of Time and Warrior Within (I think that's the next sequel in line, I stopped playing after Sands of Time), and is not a movie remake of Sands of Time. At least, that's what I've read.

Come to think of it, speaking of God of War, what was it about GoW that made it so innovative such that we've stopped calling it a Devil May Cry ripoff and now every single over the top beat-em-up is now a GoW ripoff instead of a Devil May Cry ripoff like it used to be. Mind you, this isn't a dig at either game, instead it's more of just a comparison of similar games in which one starts to supersede the other, despite the fact that both of them are pretty much the same.

I don't think people can accuse any similar game of copying another, thats the whole point of genres, different games united under similar aspects. Its like when people complain that Saints Row 2 is a GTA rip off or clone, when they shouldn't be complaining if there is a similar game in the genre they love.

god of war is just a copy of final fight crossed with mortal combat
