New Gaming Graphics Card

Hi guys. My friend is looking to upgrade his PC with a new Graphics card, and he asked me which one to get. I know a fair bit about PCs, but I thought why not go to the font of all gaming knowledge.

He want's the best gaming Desktop graphics card he can get for between £50-£100 (prefer something on the lower end of that price spectrum, but is willing to pay for a great bargain). So my question is what would be his best choice, and where is the best place to buy it from (he's in the UK)?

This should be a good indicator.

On the last page there is a hierarchy chart that will fill in the gaps if you find alternatives that are priced well.

Edit: I personally have a Nvidia Geforce 9800gt which has been great at 1440x900 resolutions (max out most games). Reason I didn't go for an Ati card was because I use Linux for most of my day to day activities and the Nvidia drivers are a ton better and easier to install.

Sapphire Radeon HD 5770, it's on the higher end (about £120) but it packs a punch for a mid-level card and will tackle most things thrown at it with ease.

If he doesn't want to spend over £100, then the the Radeon HD 5570 (anywhere fom £70-£90) is also a pretty good card. Had it in my old rig until I tangoed it... accidentally...

This depends on the games you want to play and at what resolution. If you want a DirectX 11 card then Radeon HD 5670 is probably your best bet. It comes in at around $100, which I think is close to the 50 Pound bottom. I haven't found much to be cheaper, although if you are happy with DirectX 10 then the Radeon HD 4870 would give better performance at around the same price point.

I don't think there's ever really a situation, particularly at the low end where an nVidia card is better bang for your buck than an ATI. Same with Intel CPUs vs AMD.

Simple. Get one of the newer HD series ATI cards. They're far and aware better than nVidia's latest, run a LOT cooler, and require much lower amperage's.

Well NewEgg doesn't ship to the UK so the deals are no good, but a nice resource. From what I've seen I'm going to recommend the Radeon 5000 series and let him choose which price and spec he's comfortable with.

I wasn't sure of your location. I suppose I should've checked. Regardless, as I had said, Newegg is a great place to start. Especially to get an idea of the kind of prices you can expect. Likewise, the Radeon HD 5000+ series is a stellar choice.

My brother recommended me the HD5770.

If you go on scan.co.uk (I think, if thats wrong just type scan into google) and it's about £110. I shall be getting that.

For that price range, probably 5670 or 5750 I guess. GTX 450 just came out, it's supposed to be a good performer and OC pretty well tho, so it's worth checking out.
