I'd like to see RPG's that don't have a bizarre excuse "save the world" meta-plot. As for genre, I don't really care. Background is background. What matters is what you do with it.

What about an RPG where you take the role of someone trying to take over the world? As a leader you would have base skill classes like [ul] [li] Forgery:This skill deals with fabricating false information in general and could be applied so as to manipulate the media using fabricated information.[/li] [li]Charm: This skill deals with how likeable you are. It increases your ability to manipulate the media or pass off fake documents as the real thing. It also helps avoid potentially damaging scandals.[/li] [li]Intimidation: This skill mainly governs your ability to use strong arm tactics, such as (false) imprisonment, goon squads and the like.[/li] [li]Battle strategy:This skill uses charm and intimidation as modifiers; with high enough levels in charm or intimidation the player will be able to use various war strategies including those associated with fourth generation [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_generation_warfare] and/or Asymmetric [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymetric_warfare]warfare.(Especially as it relates to Proxy warfare. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_war])[/li][/ul]
A game like this could take place in just about any setting but I would prefer it to take place in a modern setting.

I'm sure eventually I'll want to see a cowboy shoot a dwarf in the face with a magic 6-shot, but the day is not today.
You mean see it again. Because it's already been done.

Steampunk. Actual steampunk though, not that psuedo stuff we saw in Bioshock. I'm talking straight up clockwork computers ran off of steam created with coal and fire. Clockworks. Lots of them. Think gnomes from EQ except without gnomes. That'd be awesome.
More steam! And some punk would be nice, too!

How about an RPG where you're the bad guy. You're not trying to stop the world from being destroyed, having some change of heart about letting loose the Godslayer, no, you're the one trying to free those ancient horrors yourself.

As some said before me, a steampunk one would be nice. Or maybe something in a Strait Jacketish realm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strait_Jacket_(novel)).

Maybe a Civil War era Zombie game?

Like the North are fighting the South, zombie outbreak occur and everybody has to stop the Civil War to deal with the zombies. Power struggles, infighting, and stopping a zombie with a single firing flint lock rifle that takes forever to load.

It's called "Overlord" or some of the NIS Tactical RPG's. Technically in KOTOR you can also become pretty villainous.

Things I'd like to see in computer RPGs:
Bunnies & Burrows [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunnies_&_Burrows]
Caveman, wild/weird west, and steampunk are all good suggestions.
A really well done cyberpunk RPG would also be welcome.
Elric
Lankhmar
Discworld as a MMORPG. The trouble there would be an unrealistic number of "adventurers" wandering around. To really fit the setting, most of the character classes would have to be things like "Ratcatcher" or "Cabbage Farmer".

Perhaps then one that is fun. Overlord was kind of lame, imo.

Mythic India.

You've got gods by the bucketload, demons galore, crazy magic stuff, gorgeous art and architecture... fantastic material.

You could even take a sci-fi approach to it, like in Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. The main character in that story tried to overthrow the human overlords who used their technology to set themselves up as the Hindu gods.

Games about killing gods have done well in the past, after all.

I'd love to see an actual Tron RPG. Probably even an MMORPG, if it's done right (which means basically: "not like World Of Grindcraft or Bland Age Of Camelot").
Tron 2.0 went a little bit into the RPG direction, but not enough in my opinion :)

You could even use characteristics from Fantasy RPG character classes for player classes:
Rogue - Trojan
Healer - Debugger
Fighter - Firewall
Archer/Ranger - Virus Scanner
Bard-like support class - Code Optimizer
Mage - Memory Controller

and probably more.

It could really work. Lore-wise there could be some kind of "code evolution evaluation" going on, which rates the programs based on their success (Experience points, there you are), and grants sufficiently successful code additional privileges.

There could even be Jobs adapted for the digital world:

Alchemist - Compiler
Armorsmith - Backup software
Engineer - Emulator

and so on...

Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga is based heavily on Indian Mythology, it does a pretty good job of it too, hell, you can even see the Indian influence in all the architecture. The first game is even about attempting to be reborn in a higher state of existance. It even references some buddhist myth as well, with a "Bodhisatva" style figure descending to a lower level of exsitence to grant enligthenment and free the people from the tyranny of the Hindu Afterlife, it's neat.

EDIT: A Lord of Light game would rock, it's basically the story of Buddha, hence you get to cross two mythologies, which also rocks.

Something with a Steampunk setting couldn't go amiss.

I think i've had my fill of RPGs with fantasy settings and most of the Space/futuristic RPGs just don't thrill me too much, so yeah a Steampunk setting would be some interesting middle ground, and it'd looks fancy as hell to.

Well don't blame me, but ever since I played Fallout 1 the only thing I wanted as an RPG was something that mixed the initial idea for STALKER with the fallout genre, and guess what, they made it... Fallout 3. (those PAX movies ^^, joy oh joy, lunch box mines) the effect of my enthusiasm will be felt up to central Asia when I get my hands on it ^^

An RPG in a modern or modern-esque setting that DOES NOT:

*follow the "Second Society" cliche as demonstrated by Buffy, Harry Potter, The World Ends With You, and to some extent Megaman Battle Network.
*Have the non-heroes or important characters suffer from Sunnydale Syndrome
*Make your characters control the demons that do ALL the work while your character maybe does one thing that in comparison is like accomplishing a small puzzle in a Point and Click adventure game.

An RPG on the DS that uses the dual-screens. The field screen is controlled by the top screen, and you don't have to pause to bring up the menu like the map, inventory, and equipment, or the save screen because it's all on the bottom screen. When the battle screen pops up (semi-random, you see monsters running towards you like in Chrono Trigger or Tales of the Abyss) your characters are on the bottom screen like in that one Lunar game and you can either punch in commands with buttons or use the touch screen.

A steampunk or Dieselpunk RPG setting that has Colour. That's what I don't really like with either of those two settings...like with the "Realism" trend, they lack colour.

In general, an RPG that's trying to be "Realism" and actually acknowledges that there are primary colours occurring in nature. Seriously just look outside...it doesn't look like Shadow of the Colossus or Twilight Princess unless you put a few pairs of Sunglasses on and look directly into the sunrise.

I would love a good, true steampunk myself. Where you could score some clockwork power armor and a gatling pistol and shoot people while riding your coal powered steam-cycle.

A true and righteous remake of Shadowrun, not FPS, but party based and strategic would be nice too.

Some more based on PnPs I've heard about. (I'm such a closet geek, I go to the hobby store in trenchcoat and classes but can bring myself to play them, just read them.):

Necessary Evil [http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11336.phtml]
where the super-heros have been defeated by aliens and the world must rely on the super-villians to save the day. You could have the best of both worlds, act like a scumbag and still be the hero.

Rifts [http://www.palladiumbooks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=800HC&Category_Code=R800]
I've always like the look of this one. Rifts is kind of all over the place with it's setting, mixing sci-fi, magic, horror, psionics, etc. It would be like a a grittier Mass Effect.
