There are new gfx cards coming out June 27th and i am currently building a gaming rig. Will the ATI HD4850 be a better choice compared to the 8800GT. I know they will be around the same price so which is better?

Also in order to run both al you need is a PCI express right or do i have to change from my Gigabyte DS3P mobo?

Any other discussion about the new gfx cards bein released by both ATI and nVidia may as well be discussed here.

I'd go for the 8800GT, simply because I think it's more bang for buck, but then, that's me.

Right now 8800GT and 9800GT (512MB)are the best cards on the market in terms of money spent per performance. Anything beyond that, and you start paying hundreds more dollars for only very minor increases.

In short, get a 9800GT, and you'll be able to run everything that comes out in the next 3-4 years, easily.

Theres been a consistant trend towords Nvidia cards running faster, but ATI costing less. So you either go cheap or go good. And as far as your other question I'm assuming your talking about the fact that they are both PCI-E 2.0 in which case, yes it's backwards compatible with PCI-E 1.0 so as long as your mobo has PCI-E x16 you should be able to use one. But if your talking about running 2+ cards your mobo has to support SLI (Nvidia) or Crossfire (ATI) and it will only support 1 so make sure you know which one before you buy the card. But if you're using only 1 card it doesn't matter which technology your mobo supports, using only one card it doesn't use that tech.

Go with the Larrabee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larrabee_(GPU)) It'll be from DELL, be in direct competition with Radeon and nVidia GeoForce FROM RELEASE. It'll also be powerful, from what the Wiki says. Wait a year or two.

I've got meself a nVidia GeForce 6150 LE and it's served me well for the past year. Why upgrade when there's no demand until September 17th [http://www.spore.com/about.php]?

Dell..... How pathetic that Dell should be associated with power and performance. Dell is one crappy computer company and I wouldn't trust them. More to the point if this is Dell's first graphics cards (which it is) the Drivers for it will be terrible and won't work with some or most games. Then you will most likely have to deal with Dell tech support and I hope you understand Hindu for your own sake.

Edit: I'm sorry for the rant, apparently Larrabee is being made by Intel which is a completely respectable company. My comment about drivers still stands, but if enough people buy it they will fix it.

Whoops, I assumed that because of Intel = DELL. It's just being made by Intel, it might route through DELL or it might just be.

Intel and Dell are 2 completely different companies, Gateway, Hp, Alienware, and Asus all use Intel chips. As such Intel will sell the card not only to Dell but to every computer company and retailers like Newegg.com and Fry's.

Funny, being Indian, you'd think I'd of heard of 'Hindu' being a language... something you'd like to share?

Wait for Nvidia to launch their GTX 280/260s and Buy one http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=550&pgno=0 if you have time read reviews before deciding though If you can't wait or can't afford get the HD4850 by all means.

Though in the situation you described I recommend getting the HD 4850 as it has 480 stream processors when the 320(HD3870) was only 15% slower than the Nvidia 8800GT Nvidia cards now have yet to surpass the year 2006 8800GTX(actually faster than the 9800GTX and even the 9800GX2 in high resolution situations due to only having 256bits(the memory is cloned making it effectively 256bit)compared to its 384bits but that's nothing to the rumored 240 stream proccessor(112(8800GT) Nvidia shaders are faster than 320(HD3870) ATI ones) 512bit monster than is the GTX280 or even the 192 proc GTX260(though if the HD4850 is significantly cheaper or if they hold the GTX260 get that instead).

SO DON'T GET A 8800/9800(their EXACTLY THE SAME CARDS 8800GTS 512 with slight OC=9800GTX ) DUE TO THEIR OUTDATED PERFORMANCE when your willing to spend for a HD4850(I fairly doubt it will be priced to compete against the 8800GT the 9800GTX maybe but not the 8800GT)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry!! Blame the standard American ego/cultural centralism and ignorance. I was not making fun of India or it's people in any way, I was commenting on the fact that most American companies, whose largest consumer base is in America, outsources their tech support to other countries. Most Americans cannot understand what is being said do to an accent and a trans-pacific telephone connection. I'm sorry if I offended you in any way!

Enough PC covering my ass.

LCM, you point out that the 4850 has more stream processors and is therefore faster than the 8800/9800. That's not true because if you look, all of Nvidia's cards have fewer stream processors than their ATI equivalent but the Nvidia cards win in speed. By a bunch. And because I like to nitpick and always be right, Nvidia has outdone the 8800GTX with the 8800Ultra but noone wants to pay ludicrous amounts of money for such a small power gain.

I think you are thinking of 'Hindi', which is a grammatically close match.

I got me a Geforce 8500GT, and I likes it.

My personal card right now in my desktop is an 8800GTS (G80) and in my laptop I have a 8600GTS and Fable runs buttery smooth.

I heard a funny comment once. "The GeForce 9800 GTX2 is the best memory card in the world, and according to nVidia it's 30% faster than the 9600, so it's 30% faster than the fastest thing I've ever heard of."

It's alright. I think I over-reacted a little...

Anyways, I'd be thrilled if I got a 8800GT. But my current shitty motherboard, with only an AGP slot, made me get a 7600GT.

Is it hard to find Mobo's, or do you not want to upgrade it to save yourself from upgrading several other things at once?

As I said, I have a GeForce 6150 LE, and I'm thinking about upgrading. Can anyone suggest to me a good (nVidia) card that has a lot of bang for my buck that runs Half-Life 2 preferably higher than 15fps?

If your Mobo has AGP, your limited to the 7xxx series, topping out if I remember right at the 7600. If you have a PCI-E x16 slot then an 8600GT doesn't cost much and can run HL2 well enough. If you can afford it an 8800GTS (G92) or a 9xxx series card would do it the best versus price at the moment.
