I didn't say "distressed damsel". I said "heroine". There's a difference between a character who ends up getting kidnapped and needing to be rescued every five minutes, and a character who somehow helps save the day through dumb luck, despite being a cynical coward who wants nothing more than to go home and let somebody else take care of all this.

After all, I can't recall too many cowardly heroines. As a matter of fact, I can recall none.

Yes, like when Lara Croft and her bosoms of might are pursued by raging wild animals and men armed with deadly guns, does she give a crap? NO! She seems to draw a gun from the two inches of clothing she wears, and does away with them! Does a flicker of fear pass her face when being pursued by a giant boulder down a fairly narrow passage? Heck no! Lara dives into a passage at just the right time, and acts like she never doubted that it was there.

I like it when main characters are douchebags with witty comebacks, but are good people in the end. They know what they should do and then they actually follow through with it.

I liked Gerald in The Witcher. The point is, he wants to stay neutral to avoid further anger and he dislikes doing mindless quests.

In games like Oblivion, Gothic or Hellgate your harvest every damn quest and kill every damn enemy to get XP, $ and items. Just take it over to real life : wouldnt you hate it to collect 6 bottles of dogshit, 12 branches and 60 pieces of ore all the time ?

He doesnt like that, and he shows it in the game :

Priest : Light the candles in the 5 shrines along the way and the haunting will end !
Gerald : Why should I dot that ? This crap will never work...
Priest : DO IT ! (or I will never tell you whant you want to know...)

Very clever : the story forces you to make decitions between peoples, situations and allys all the time. Mob vs Witch, Freedom Fighters / Terrorists vs Humans, Woman A vs Woman B, Kill vs Let Live ...

Gerald : No, I want to stay neutral
xxx : You have to take a side !

Further you have to "infiltrate" a boring and snobby high society meeting and he realy shows that he doenst like that and gets annoyed and begs his girlfriend to leave asap ^^

One kid in the game annoyed him so much he was close to slap the little bugger...

That a real and believeable charakter, and not a grind mashine.

How about Heroes more like the Characters from Resident Evil: Outbreak and it's sequel? Ordinary Civilians, using what they acquired in their lines of work, their own meagre-seeming talents in daily life, and anything they can lay hands on, just to see not just the next day, but next hour. Sure there was a Cop and a Vietnam Vet, but there was also a Waitress, a Doctor, a University Student, a Reporter, and a Subway Employee (Not the restaurant)...definitely NOT typical hero fare.

I like the idea of ANYONE having the capacity to be a Hero if they just don't take things lying down...or even just by trying to survive.

I would like to Marneus Calgar as hero. For you cool kids who know, he's a space marine from Warhammer 40,000. They guy is 7 feet tall, has 2 giant power fists that crackle with pure power that can rip the head of anything and he has two boltguns. The Guys a walking tank that commands 1000 ultramarines.

I know I didn't come up with the idea but he would make an awesome character to fight with.

Space Marines are pretty much the natural progression of the "Arnold" and the "Rambo". I mean, they're genetically-modified super-humans whose DNA was taken from a man revered as a living deity, they're the greatest warriors Humanity has to offer...

Oh, and a single one of them can dead-lift one of the heavily-armoured tanks they ride around in, after crawling up a mountain for fifteen days straight, using only his teeth. Marneus "Papa Smurf" Calgar is pretty much a Super Space Marine with massive metal fists.

He'd only be an awesome character to fight with if he kept going up against enemies that could challenge him. At that point, you may as well have stuck with Angus McNormal, if you were going to always be challenged by enemies his level.

I think playing as a bad guy can be fun, who hasn't found it fun standing on the top of building with a rocket launcher and blowing the living hell out of passers by? It would be fun if you could play a game where the main character is evil as hell and is bent on world destruction, kind of like a reverse RPG where a band of heroes is after you...

I can think of a lot of enemies that could challenge him, and some space marines that could top him. But I'm certain that if someone did make a 40k game then they would make a Calgar your average American joe who is able tosurvive in combat even though the fucked up character has no experience with guns and send him on an adventure to save his family from naxis......on mars.

How about a battle-scarred, gravel voiced albino bad-ass chemically mutated monster hunter thing in a sort of "high fantasy gone wrong" setting where everyone hates him because he's "mutie" despite the fact that he's just about the only gy around who is not irredeemably nasty.... oh damn, that one is taken.

Custard Rhubard, a mysterious blonde equiped with a frying pan, travels the world in search of the Gourmand of Fates, and find the mythical recipe to restore his sister's sense of taste, with the help of a magical cookbook. Naturally, a trippy and lighthearted game.

Personally games can be a great way to not think about reality, so why do i want to worry about poverty and that kid in africa that I've never met who can't get enough food every night, WHILE im shooting up the latest bad guy. So, make your politically correct characters, while i shoot terrorists in CSS.
