Well guys, people join the Escapist all the time. Here is a thread for you and them. For the new people checking out Off Topic for the first time, think of a one line sentence of advice for survival.

"Stay out of the basement" is universal. So let's think of a few new ones!

And if you are new and reading this, welcome! :D

Hmm, let's see...

"Come to User Reviews. We need your souls words."

"Read the Code of Conduct. Seriously. Just do it. Don't just scroll to the bottom and agree. Read it. It takes, like, a couple of minutes at most. Please?"

"Avoid R&P because you don't get to come out of there unscathed. It's a joke!

That's all I've got for now. All of those are clearly imperative and entirely equal to each other. Yes, sir!

Make long, thought out comments.
Just small talk like "yes I agree" will get you a low-content warning. Add some depth into your words even if it means just explaining your opinion to make it look longer or adding more words so that instead of just one sentence it becomes a paragraph.

I thought "Don't drop the soap" was the most universal advice anyone can give...

Oh well, I became a member a few days ago so I'm a newbie. Other than that...I got nothing.
I've been to a few forums so I'm weary of the universal rules that are given out like no trolling or advertising.

If you want the Forum Inferno badge, just make a thread about Anita Sarkeesian or Feminism and watch the views and replies roll in effortlessly. Also avoid any and all threads related to either of those topics. It isn't worth the headache involved.

We need to remind people that VS threads are just plain annoying. They seem to be making a comeback.

I remember a time when they were either locked or ended in probations.

Just post with the rules in mind and you can't go wrong. Making mistakes and embarrassing yourself is a harmless way of learning the ins and outs of this place.

Generally, the best advice that will keep you out of the red, in no particular order of importance...
[li]Don't be a dick. Seriously. Personal attacks will land you Mod Wrath[/li]
[li]If you think a thread/user is breaking the rules, report and move on.[/li]
[li]Have a content standard for your posts.
Mine is if I don't have at least 2 sentences worth of content, then I'm not adding any real discussion.[/li]
[HEADING=2][small]ANNNNND[/small][/HEADING]

[li]When in doubt, contact a Mod or post in the moderation usergroup![/li]
[hr]
Happy posting, you guys!

[li]If you want to start your own thread(s), go ahead. But try to be original, and don't go overboard (5 threads in an hour is overboard, probably).[/li]

[li]Make sure you're in the right sub-forum, if you miss-posted contact a Mod and they'll move your thread for you.[/li]

I can't believe no-one has posted this yet, it should be mandatory for all new users to press the red button for a wonderful surprise:

Press me ->
<- Press me

Also, we all know which user [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view] is going to fool for this :)

Hey guys! I'm new to the escapist, I haven't really been on many gaming forums before but this place seems ok

EDIT: oh and I know that It might not look like I'm new because of my post count and join date but this account was someone else's but I borrowed it from the nice girl whose bedroom window I broke into...had to stuff her in the cupboard to keep her quiet or she was going to wake the neighbors (women amiright?) the thing I like about forums is you can say all kinds of things you wouldn't normally say in life...I'm thinking of marrying the girl I stuffed in the cupboard..

ok seriously

my advice would be constant use of the word "lol" and "tlking like u r txting" is kind of annoying and stands out..and doesn't do much for your credibility

Remember that someone disagreeing with your opinion isn't necessarily a personal attack on you - try to avoid getting too emotional or aggressive when discussing/debating something with another user.

Also, try reading your post aloud before you actually submit it - sounds ridiculous, but sometimes it helps. :p

If you're replying to someone, don't forget to QUOTE THEM. It's less common now that the "reply" button has been replaced by "post", but still happens. Quoting sends a PM letting them know someone replied.

Also, when replying to a topic, read the entire OP, not just the title.

Also, don't try to be Yahtzee. A lot of newbies here come because of ZP, try to snark their way through the forums and it shows. We already have a Yahtzee, he's called Yahtzee. Gah, now even I'm doing it!

Daystar demands a blood sacrifice.

Daystar demands chicken wings and soft pretzels.

Daystar shall speak in the 3rd person until it enrages everyone.

I always thought it was "Clear your browser history before lending your computer to someone else."

But the soap one is important too.

Also, welcome! :D

Under the old laws new members were made to serve as Daystar's concubines for a few years before they could be full-fledged posters. Fortunately I led a successful revolution a few months back and that law has since been abolished.

Now you just have to offer me, the Escapist's new God-Emperor, the immortal soul of your firstborn :D
