New name for american futbol

Hi there,

I talk with a fair number of people online and they bring up sports a lot. They really enjoy american futbol and we often talk about that and real football, the problem is that it gets annoying saying 'american futbol' and they really don't like it. So I'm trying to think of a subsitute name. Obviously I can't call it 'handegg' as it comes off insulting. They've taken to calling football 'footy'. So the best I have so far is 'pass ball'. Handball is already used so that's out of the picture. 'Soccer' is off limits as it's insulting(even if it's a bastardized version of a word a select few used to refer to football a long, long time ago).

Can you guys help me come up with a non-insulting term for american futbol?

Another commonly used term is "gridiron", referring to the pattern of lines on the field.

But really, if you live in a place where futbol is more common than American football then they should probably just learn to live with it, because that's what most people are going to call it.

Is American Football really that hard to type? I don't get why it's so annoying. The shortest thing I can come up with is to refer to it as NFL which stands for National Football League and as far as I know won't be confused with anything else. It might be a little clunky since it refers to a league and not the sport itself.

Just call it football.

The other sport is futbol. They aren't pronounced the same way.

I don't have a problem with saying American Football.

I rarely ever have to use the term though.

To make things more complicated, I refer to both soccer and GAA as football. I don't think it's that confusing because, in most cases, the context of the conversation makes it obvious which one you're referring to.

Use NFL, NCAA SEC( or any super conference) Honestly should be pretty easy to discern from the context of a convo which football your talking about. Or just use Soccer.

Well, Rugby is basically gridiron but they play in futbol/soccer/international football/FIFA uniforms.
OT: I've heard some people call it handegg, but that might be interpreted as a derogatory term by some Americans. Myself not included. But you can't really call it NFL as don't forget there is the ARENA football league (AFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL).

It's like when people try to correct Americans for saying soccer... Why? Why is it hard to understand that there's a dialect difference between the 300 million American English speakers and the rest of the English speaking world?

It's not funny anymore when you get "corrected" every single time.

Some people say Trousers, some people says pants, and the same is true of Soccer and Football.

Maybe I seem butt hurt, but when you're trying to talk about the world cup and you just get a million asterisks going *football it's just... jesus Christ guys XD

It amuses me that sometimes people forget there is a WHOLE FREAKING OCEAN between the United States and the rest of the English Speaking world, save Canada. Linguistic differences are to be expected, and respected.

Canada plays football, and it also plays soccer. It also plays football. Can't we all be like Canada and just use the terms interchangeably? Like the terms "football" and "sport".

Err no, its wimpy rugby for those that don't like getting punched in the face. However neither is as violent as Aussie rules chess.

Rugby is massive different. Yes its similar but the differences are huge

Handegg seems to be an american slang. In Britain we tend to call it "poof rugby" (not that I condone the term but its a common saying) or "padded rugby"

Personally I think americans should just play rugby instead of american football. Its similar enough for the skills to be transferable yet different enough to make it a better sport. American football is ok I guess but its designed for TV which ironically makes it worse to watch. Its constant ad breaks and its too stop/start to have a free flowing game. Football and rugby pre-date TV and theres only 15 mins at half-time for an 80-90 min game. They stop for substitutes but only a few mins not like american football where they stop to rearrange the whole team

As long as "padded rugby" exists im happy to call it american football but I refuse to call football soccer

I just call it football and the other sport soccer and it works really well. You'd think the world could just do that as well and not have to worry about coming up with alternate names for things.

Calling football soccer in the UK is like punching someone's sainted grandmother in the tit. If you are american you will be excused but for a native its a massive social faux pas. I dont know why this is the case it just is

I either designate them as football and american football or football and handegg. Or sometimes NFL. Or Am football. Or AF. depends on how lazy i'm being and who I'm talking about it with

ugh. this reminds me that the holidays are coming up and american football is going to start up again and I'll be forced into family gatherings that it's going to be all around me and I'm going to have to explain (yet again) why I have no interest in it (you'd think that 11 years of the same explanation they'd start to get it).....

But really, I think anyone who's going to correct someone else's term of a word is kind of a **** anyway especially when it's on like a site like this in which general geographic locations are in our profiles and we all know that terms for things differ depending on geographical location.

It's like Elsass/Lothringen - Alsace/Lorraine. Call 'em depending on what Rome you're currently in. If American Football is a bit unwieldy, shorten it to Amiball or something.

Although I will say, regular football is more aptly name. It involves a ball that you move with your feet.

American Football is only really known for being played in America. Meanwhile, Football is played in the entire rest of the world.

So, Iunno, I'm just gonna go off what 90% of the world is calling it rather than some appeasement towards the minority.
