So I just recently did some upgrades on my PC and have almost fully converted to PC gaming. I've been gaming on console for a long time and have played just about every game I can get a hold of on Xbox 360 and PS3. I'm just wondering about a couple of things.
First off, what are some PC games that can't be overlooked. Even if they are on console, I'm willing to replay games. I just don't want to miss out on anything that is truly better on PC.
Secondly, I would love some friends to play with! I'm currently playing Borderlands, Diablo III, Dungeon Defenders (on Steam), and Magicka (on Steam).
EDIT: My steam name is KILRbuny. Same as my Username here.
Well if you're into everything, guess I'll just recommend my personal favourites from the gog site.
First of all, I consider this series pretty much mandatory for any rpg fan: Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2. In my mind Biowares finest work to date and the pinaccle of what an rpg should strive to be. Solid narrative, great characters, surprisingly vibrant 2D artwork even today, entertaining tactical combat, absolutely massive open world... I seriously can't think of any real major flaws in the series. It's absolutely brilliant. And then when you consider there are mods out there which combine BG1 and 2 into one cohesive game as well as improve and tweak the experience towards perfection, then really you just can't get any better. Though other rpg try such as...
Planescape: Torment. You might've heard of this game, hell, there's probably another active topic about it in these forums right now somewhere. Bluntly put this game has by far the best fantasy story and one of the most unique styles and setting in any game, regardless of genre, ever. It's not disputable, it's fact. In terms of story, setting and character Planescape: Torment is one of the most in-depth and provocative games ever made. If only the combat and the basic gameplay mechanics were more solid it'd probably be my number 1 pick for rpg ever. But as it is it comes a close second, which considering how many rpg I've played, is still damned impressive methinks.
Stepping a bit away from pure rpg we've got the absolutely spectacular Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It's a hard game to describe to someone that might not be familiar with this sort of game, so I'll just say it's brilliant and that everything this game does, it does exceptionally well. This is another of those 'I can't think of any real flaws' sort of games, so much so that despite being well over ten years old, I've introduced this game to kids who hadn't even been born when it came out and seen them enjoy it! Now that's the sign of a solid, long lasting experience!
If you wanna give the old Point & Click classic PC adventure games a try, my personal favourite is The Longest Journey. Despite all the gushy mushy love I just gave to Planescape above, this is the game which in terms of story and character really stole my heart. Planescape is deeper, more in-depth and covers a number of more touchy subject but The Longest Journey... well, it's got soul. The main protagonist is my favourite of any game and her journey throughout the games length is enthralling. It's like a really, really nice book for me that I like to re-read every once and awhile for that fuzzy warm feeling of nostalgic happiness. Even nostalgia wont blind me to the shit puzzles and gameplay, but screw that, use a walkthrough if you have to. The story is worth it in my mind!
And as a final suggestion for something more actiony if that's you're thing: Freespace 2. The space sim that was so good it killed the genre... or at least I like to think so. Simply put the story is solid but the gameplay so awesomely intense that you'll be suffering from shellshock and probably need to have your fingers pried from the joystick (I bought a force-feedback joystick exclusively for this game. So worth it!) with a pair of pliers when it's done. Not only that, but of all the games I just listed, this is probably the easiest to get into since a couple of years ago the developers released the games source code online, and as a result the community has been improving the engine ever since to such an extent that it still looks fantastic today. This game is so good at what it does it's become an entire genre unto itself, with so many mods and even total conversion that buying this game is like buying the last ten years worth of amazing space sims all in one. I kid you not!
And there you go! Between those five games (Technically 6 since there's 2 BG games!) that's enough PC gaming goodness to keep a normal human occupied for... hell, well over a year especially if they take the time to play the games fully and explore the communities which have sprung up around each game.

- Civilization IV/V
- Serious Sam HD
- Knights of the Old Republic
- Dragon Age Origins
- anything Bethesda has ever really developed
- Metro 2033
- Crysis

I'm leaving a ton of great games out that have escaped my mind at the moment, and theres a ton of multi-platform titles that I didn't mention that are also best played on PC.
... damn, now I have to reinstall Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and find that patch again.

The latest games are historically accurate, detailed and not too complicated. The above-average graphics and the number of units in the game can slow weaker computers; if you do have a good computer I think it's a fun series to buy. You've got to know more than basic strategy tactics in order to win, i.e. flanking, good unit deployment and movement, cover in trees, etc.
The campaign mode's almost like a version of Civilization where you have to manage towns, farms, etc while moving units in turns, and the actual tactical battles occur when your army comes in contact with an enemy one. It's nice if you like that sort of thing, but if you just want the battles they always have Skirmish and Multiplayer mode.
Napoleon: Total War is having a free weekend right now on steam, give it a try and judge for yourself. Napoleon isn't the strongest game in the series I would say but it's far from bad and if you're a fan of strategy gaming you'll likely enjoy. Something oh so satisfying about that mix of turn based grand strategy and massive real time battles.
Can't really go wrong with any game in the series either. They've all got their good and bad, some more one than the other, but by and large they're all fantastic strategy games.
Strategic turn-based campaign map, with tactical battles being played out as pausable real-time. The AI is ok'ish but not good. The economic system on the campaign map is more obfuscated and complicated than necessary, and hides what is essentially linear upgrade paths.
The tactical battles look great and has good controls. The maps have great variety and the AI generally plays well enough to make it feel like real battles.
Total War games work well as an immersive simulation. Looking at all the little soldiers getting their limbs blown off never gets old. But the core gameplay lacks a bit. Games do tend to last very long and feel samey after a while.
It's an old series which has seen many technical improvements. My personal favorites are Shogun 2, Napoleon:TW and Empire:TW.

For the original topic I'll recommend a few games, not already mentioned:
Terraria - Minecraft clone with a 2d platforming point of view.
World of Tanks - Free to play, multiplayer tank action/tactical game.
Magicka - Top-down isometric spellcaster action game, with weird and wonderful humour and gameplay.
Legend of Grimrock - Old school dungeon crawler, Dungeon Master style.
Warcraft III - Old classic RTS typical Blizzard style. Still looks decent with great story and gameplay.
AH! yes i'm a big fan of the Total War series. I got Rome Total War after like six months of searching stores in my area like 5 years ago and still play it. I got Empire and my PC couldn't run it but now it can so... ya i'm gonna play that. I'm enjoying Skyrim Mods right now too. Wish you could mod console games like this.

sent you a friend request, never hurts to have more friends!
i saw another post of yours that described alot of the games you've played/liked, and I would definitely reiterate on the rpg's by bethesda and bioware, mods seriously enhance their games so much, it's so much fun having 50+ mods on a new playthrough, besides the plot, it's like playing an entire new game sometimes.
(also, if you liked/didn't get a chance to play kotor 2, pick it up here from amazon and you can download the amazing restoration mod patches online to make the game from what it should've been (they didn't get enough time to complete it, so the ending and alot of the bugs didn't get ironed out all the way))
Current tourney im playing And I am drunken ~deer~ check out my skiilllllzzz
regardless the single player campaign even if you dont go online is well well worth checking out. Get the Myth II soublighter game for 10 dollars, and there is a free download port to let you play the first game on the myth 2 soulblighter engine.
If you like adventure games or amazing stories, check out Wadjet Eye. Their Blackwell Series and Gemini Rue are not to be missed.
Arcanum is, again, a must.
The Legacy of Kain.
Knights of the Chalice
Uplink
Eschalon
Planescape
Baldur 1/2
Fallout 1 and 2
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
Machinarium
Second Sight
The Gabriel Knight games...at least worth it if you want to hear Tim Curry try to speak in a Cajun accent. Which is just ...mind blowing.
Deus Ex (just the first one)
The Thief games
Sacrifice
Monkey Island
Braid
Temple of Elemental Evil
World of Goo
Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2. The general consensus is that the expansions are better than the original campaigns but you can get a kick out of them anyway.
Phantasmagoria (psychological horror, but not as scary as Amnesia)
