Well most of my ideas have been said already but the few I can think of would probably be
-psychonauts, its old but still one of the best platformers of all time.
-Max Payne series including the new one which is fantastic and looks absolutely gorgeous.
-Tera, you can sign up for a free 7 day trial if your looking for an mmo to try. I've been playing it and I must say its pretty good so far.
-And lastly Guild Wars 1 is another great mmo that you can get for cheap with no superscription needed. Also look into Guild Wars 2, I played the beta last week and I was pretty impressed by it.

And if your looking for someone to play Diablo 3 with you can just send me pm with your battletag and I'll add you if your up for it.

I recommend changing to xbox.
Seriously though get Bastion and things like that. PC is good for single player games.

If you can get the Thief games to run on your PC (1&2, 3 should run fine it's not so old) you will get to play some of the finest games ever made (well.. except for 3, but it's still a good game)

Imagine the original DeusEx set in a steampunk/fantasy setting with a greater focus on stealth. Superb level design, engaging story, really good mechanics. It's the game that literally invented the stealth genre, and so far no game has ever even come close to being as good.

Thief 2 is the best game of the series, so you could start with that and then work your way through the rest.

Warcraft III is still a wonderful game. Great single player campaign (and with the Frozen Throne expansion pretty damn long too) and still an insane number of really fun custom maps being played. Though the multiplayer and maps are done better in SC2, the campaign is well worth buying for.

Terraria is very fun to play, especially with friends. It's a more focused experience than Minecraft, with much more meaningful exploration and progression.

You've already said you're a great fan of the Total War series so I'm just going to say that Shogun2 is the best one so far, go get it now!

Heroes of Might and Magic. Probably safer to start with the 5th game in the series unless you can stomach the very dated 2d graphics of the 3rd game. Either way it's an iconic PC turn based game and well worth your time.

Max Payne 1 and 2 are both awesome games, well worth playing today. The 3rd game... is linear GTA IV without the cars but with dodgy bullet time. In my opinion Max Payne 3 is like DeusEx 2... it's got the same ideas, but just completely fails to live up to the series' expectations. Would probably have been a decent game on it's own... but falls short as it is.

Monkey Island 1-3 and Grim Fandango. The great adventure games of the 90's, amazing story, wonderful humour, generally clever and not obtuse puzzles.

Look into Bastion, Terraria, Recettear, Portal, Thief, Stacking, Fallout and Elder scrolls, may not all be for you but I got a lot of enjoyment out of them. Steam name lordJeff feel free to find and add me, though I don't play much of multiplayer.

How is Stacking? I've heard about it and thought the idea quite awesome, but I've also heard it's very short and buggy and that kinda kept me from getting it.

I didn't notice any bugs at all during the game at the very least it has no game breaking bugs. It is a little on the short side compared to most games but pretty standard length for a indie games at it's price point at only 5 hours for the main story but it has a good number of collectables and alternate puzzle solutions beyond that. I recommend it of course it's a very charming, funny, and unique game. A definite buy if your into puzzle gaming at all.

CS:Source doesn't sound too much like my bag of tricks just because I don't enjoy competitive MP much.
You don't have the play the vanilla game. I clocked over 400 hours into the first Counter-Strike, and I hate the game. I spent most of my time on Zombie-mod servers(I bought the game because I had heard of it). Sadly, I can't find any server that I like nowadays(Unlimited ammo is NOT fun). And CS: Source has some really fun mini-game maps; obstacle courses and the like.

I would urge anyone who doesn't like competitive FPSs to look into Counter-Strike.

I don't think driving games and 2D platformers are really better on PC. Driving with a keyboard just feels funny, I don't know why. It's why I use my wired Xbox controller for those sorts of games, because it feels better than using a keyboard.

OT: There's a bunch of awesome PC games that you just need to get, but most of them have already been listed! Also, add me on steam and I'll happily gift you Max Payne 1 or 2, seeing as I had them already and got extra copies when I pre ordered 3. Name is: ToastiestZombie

Get Team Fortress 2. It's free and it's probably the best multiplayer FPS you can get for the low price of nothing. Once you have it, find a server running a map called MARIO_KART2_IG. Enjoy the dance parties and general hilarity.

Oh, and Blacklight: Retribution. Another awesome F2P FPS.

Screw it, here's a list: Torchlight 2 (pre-order to get the first game and all the amazing mods it has to offer), Company of Heroes, Killing Floor, Garry's Mod (that goes without saying), Supreme Commander, Sins of a Solar Empire, Mount and Blade: Warband: Napoleonic Wars DLC (100 vs 100 musket battles), Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 1 (2 and Chaos Rising suck but Retribution is pretty good), Anno 2070, Napoleon: Total War (F2P this weekend on Steam), Skyrim, Portal 2.

That should get you started.

EDIT: Forgot World in Conflict. Absolutely fucking outstanding RTS. First RTS I've ever played that had a really good story.

I've played Half Life 1&2 before, and Portal is probably my favorite Valve duet of games.

I LOVE Minecraft.

CS:Source doesn't sound too much like my bag of tricks just because I don't enjoy competitive MP much.

I got into Deus Ex after playing Human Revolution and thought what everyone else thought: Brilliant!

I've tried WoW before. Got to level 26(?) and got bored just grinding for levels and paying for it.

Civilization V is brilliant.

Never played anything Serious Sam related, I'll have to check that out.

KotOR is possibly my favorite Star Wars related game and my second favorite Bioware game. They just get what Star Wars fans want.

DA:O was a favorite of mine on my PS3 and I've heard it's better on PC now that you mention it. I'll have to replay that.

Bethesda has my heart. Mostly for Oblivion and Skyrim. Fallout 3 was great too.

I played a bit of Metro 2033 on the 360 and just couldn't get into it. I don't know why... I'll retry that one.

Crysis was pretty, but not a huge FPS fan. I enjoy some though, so maybe I'll look into it on PC.

What is Dark Messiah? I don't think I've ever heard of that.
Dark Messiah is an offshoot of heroes of might and magic V, its a first person melee combat game and its pretty good, I loved heroes V though, I would suggest you give it a shot, also there is another game that is similar called kings bounty, you can get it on steam, the original is fantastic and crossworlds is the 2nd game, armored princess along with some neat extra stuff. OH OH OH,if you like tower defense games at all then try out gratuitous tank battles.

If you want to add me to steam send me a PM with your steam name and Ill add you to my list.

Thanks for the info Mad/Ldude, I'll look into them.
If you want to get into them i recommend rome or Medieval 2.
In my opinion by far the best of the series (Exspecially Medieval 2).
Empire was not that much fun and i don't know why but i couldn't never really get into Shogun 2. It's kinda fun but i hoped for more unit diversity, exspecially that the "special units" for each clan is just the SAME unit everybody gets, with better stats.

kinda just prooved his point, he didn't say keyboard was better, he said PC was better. for one of the reasons you said. You can choose your own input.

OT: start with Dwarf fortress. Its really Fun, and its different every time you start a new..... hey.... why is everyone looking at me like that.....

Ok DONT start with dwarf fortress.... Not sure where you live, but one way I found to try out games that have no demo is to get a free onlive account. Just about everything has 30minutes of free trial, and then if you like it you can go buy it from steam so there's no input lag, and better graphics.

Hands down, a can't miss PC game is Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
Cool. Looks very interesting. Although I'm a little worried about how scary it might be. I nearly shat myself playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
I wouldn't worry about that, theres only one or two levels id consider scaryish. Definitely not on the same level as amnesia.
I'd definitely second the recommendation, its a fantastic game. For added hilarity play as a malkavian.

Yeah I admit, I worded that wrong. I was meant to say PCs overall were better because you aren't limited to one control method. But, sometimes when a game has really bad keyboard controls AND no gamepad support then I just want to hit something, it reeks of bad port. Most of the Lego games are like this, good thing I've only bought one for PC.

Captcha: I want control. How relevant.

So I just recently did some upgrades on my PC and have almost fully converted to PC gaming. I've been gaming on console for a long time and have played just about every game I can get a hold of on Xbox 360 and PS3. I'm just wondering about a couple of things.

First off, what are some PC games that can't be overlooked. Even if they are on console, I'm willing to replay games. I just don't want to miss out on anything that is truly better on PC.

Secondly, I would love some friends to play with! I'm currently playing Borderlands, Diablo III, Dungeon Defenders (on Steam), and Magicka (on Steam).
The games I recommend are The Witcher, The Witcher 2, Knight of The Old Republic, Dragon Age: Origins, Fallout: New Vegas, TES IV Oblivion, TES V Skyrim, Alan Wake, Portal, Portal 2, Half-Life series, Deus Ex series, and Max Payne 3.

Sorry if the list was kinda long. I tend to list every game I like as a recommendation. Another user listed VTM: Bloodlines and that is a really good game. I bought it about a year ago on Steam and I absolutely love it.

Not going to read the thread. Just throwing Titan Quest and Sanctum out there, in case anyone wants to look at them. Borderlands was a great start though.

Very true. Though that's a weakness of the developer.
I personally prefer the ps3 controller plugged into the PC for sidescrollers though. much better dpad.

really odd how relevent the captchas are these days.... mine is Level Playing Field.....

Edit: BTW op, you're going to get a tonne of recommendations for older games that take a little bit more effort to get into that the current bunch of brown shooters.
such as Morrowind vs Skyrim.

On that note I seriously recommend Morrowind. unless you don't like reading, at which point I say, what are you doing here?
Muhahaha.
