I'd say to try Crysis just because it's cheap, fairly open mapped and damn pretty.

For RTS you can try C&C3 and Starcraft 2 to get a grip on the genre before deciding what you want from an RTS.
I don't think my computer can run Crysis. But thanks though.

A P4 and 256 meg graphics card can run crysis on low.

Get Metro 2033

I'll see if I can. I've been plenty interested in Metro and the STALKER series.

STALKER is okay. If you get SoC, get the 2009 overhaul.

Most WRPGs suddenly become better. Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, KoTOR.

Battlefield is much better on the PC. I think you can get BF2 plus all of its expansion for $20 on Steam.

Serious Sam is another great one. It's more of an old school shooter, but really, very good.

Red Orchestra is good if you like realism. ArmA is another good game.

Killing Floor is fun.

All Valve games are better on the PC. Period.

The Total War series is good for RTS.

If you're interested in grand strategy, try out Paradox Interactive games such as Europa Universalis 3, Victoria, or Hearts of Iron.

Age of Empires 2 is arguably the greatest RTS ever

Starcraft is the other contender for best RTS. So is Warcraft 3

Command and Conquer is fun as well. Especially the Red Alert games.

If you can find it and run it, Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are some of the best and most visually beautiful games I've ever played. There's nothing like leading a star fleet into battle with an entire nebula as a background.

You are not allowed to own a PC and not have TF2.

Pretty much any game by Valve is awesome. I'm new to PC gaming too, and I just got Starcraft 2 (which I'm terrible at) but it looks like a fun RTS if you're into that.

if you want some good rts games then check out the dawn of war series and the company of heroes series and world in conflict, steam has them all for not much money

-Killing Floor for an awesome FPS

-Oblivion (and mods from tesnexus.com) for WRPG awesomeness.

-FoFiX (Frets on Fire iX) if you're into music games. It's like RB/GH but free. Plus if you already have instruments for the console versions you can make them work for FoF (360 you need to buy an adapter though I think).

-League of Legends is a cool RTS game that is also free.

-Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 1 & 2 - I don't know about 1 but the multiplayer for 2 isn't all that active, it's still worth it for the Single Player though. Great tactical FPS games.

-Revenge of the Titans is a fun little RTS/Tower Defense game that's great for playing in between other things or for long periods of time.

Warcraft 3
Starcraft 2
Team Fortress 2
Mass Effect 1 + 2
Call of Duty 4

A lot of people seem to be fans of Age of Empires 2 and Battlefield, though I haven't played either.

I have a gaming PC and I don't have TF2. And I see no reason to buy that.

*topic* I'd suggest you get the Orange Box. It's cheap and it comes with a lot of stuff. For a decent strategy game, I'd recommend something like Anomaly: Warzone Earth. Borderlands is a pretty good FPS/RPG.

Honestly,

The best thing you can do at this point in time if you are new to PC gaming is wait 4 more weeks until Steam's Summer Sale. Set aside about $100 and you'll walk away with around 30+ AAA games from the past 4 years.

You can thank me later.

Fuck. The summer sale. I'd almost forgotten.

Ignore everything other than this post OP. Wait for the summer sale, spend 50 dollars, get 100 games.
