I don't get this, it doesn't serve any purpose. Why is Nintendo doing this? If a kid uses a swear word for a name in the game, he, of course, knows that word, so what does it help to filter such words? It just takes a bit of freedom away but nothing more.

Prepare your DS for W4N9 4 54URU5 R3X

Also, who cares about a few swear words? They're gonna learn them eventually. Instead, teach them when they shouldn't use them. Although this is an untested method and I'm not a parent.

This entire comment in heindseight is invalid. It probably shouldn't exist. I just wanted to type wang a saurus rex somewhere and appear sensible.

So long as I can still name my rival and/or Caterpie "penis" I'll be happy.

I was thinking the same. There is absolutely no point in filtering out bad words in the input the player provides. Who else cares if you name your rival Assface? No one else is going to battle him. And if they're worried that an innocent little kid is offered a Cloyster named Vag for trade over the DS wireless connection, that kid has to worry less about learning bad words and more about getting out of broadcasting range from this person.

there's no such thing as a "woefully incomplete" swear filter. they can only be "delightfully incomplete".

LMAO, this is reminding me of the Robot Chicken sketch where Gary and Ash battle.

"Hey ASS! Wanna Battle?"

"My names not ASS, it's ASH!"

Ehh, kids will be kids. It's pointless to try and censor a game. There's always going to be kids who go out of their way to give crude names, and by making it a challenge Nintendo is only validating the effort. Indeed, if they hadn't we wouldn't even be hearing about it.

My first memory of a pokemon game was a friend who had his rival named "Fuckass". He was 7 at the time, and I'm sure that if there had been censorship at the time it still wouldn't have stopped him from making that name.

As longs as there's a Pokemon that fires out a liquid and the word Masturbater hasn't been blocked, I'll be rather happy..

[sub] I thought it was pretty good..[/sub]

Oh man, my favorite thing to do was name rival "Asshole". Seriously, 7 letters, it was almost too perfect a fit.

ONline battles.
They may be facing someone who doesn't know the word and then shit happens.

OOOOOOOH A SWEAR FILTER IN THE NEW POKEMON GAMES? HOW FANCY!
Seriously though, it is a proud tradition of mine to call my rival something like "Douche" or "Butthead" and I won't take kindly to Nintendo challenging my traditions.
