So I want to replay pokemon heartgold but make a team using pokemon I don't normally use, so far I have this.
>Hitmonlee
>Lapras or kingdra
>Typhlosion
>Magneton
So any advice is welcome, and I really just want an odd team.

here's a few very useful, commonly overlooked guys

Heracross (extremely high attack power and good move pool)
Scizor (high defence, good move pool and special ability)
Scarmory (high defence, decent speed, fairly high attack)
Blissie (high special defence, highest HP of non-legendary, can be used as a healer in multi-battles)
Electrode (extremely fast, fairly powerful and is one of the few speedy pokemon with explosion... a lot of other guys die before they can use it)
Porygon Z (give it hyperbeam and it will tear shit up)
Espeon (nearly identical offensive stats to alakazam without the extremely low defense)
Shuckle (highest defence and special defence, but low HP, give it a lot of HP UPs and EV train it in HP as much as you can, teach it toxic, doubleteam, detect and flash. I managed to solo kill a guys entire team once with a shuckle using that move set.)

you use any of these?

yea Im a bit of a nerd at pokemon.....

An odd team you say?
I have a list of under used Pokemon
Togekiss
Girafarig
Miltank
Crobat
Mamoswine (if you choose Kingdra and not Lapras)
Dodrio
Exeggutor
I tried to pick guys with types you didn't already have
As a side note I'd pick Lapras over Kingdra

Use Dunsparce. A few TM's and it becomes an average contender. Grab a Gengar if you can manage. Maybe Houndoom to get some good variety.

I'm surprised you haven't had a team of Quilavas yet. Or no, that's just me?

Magneton is awesome. I just tried a similar thing when I got HeartGold.

I had a combination of Crobat, Arcanine, Alakazam, Steelix, Dragonite and Ampharos

I end up using espeon in every play through I do anyway. I love scizor in my crystal a level 100 scizor was my whole team. I might try a porygon Z.

"Commonly overlooked"? Other than shuckle, those pokemon have seen regular circulation in OU games.

If you really want to go with pokemon you would never normally use, play a nuzlocke game. I suggest imposing a "No repeats, can catch the next pokemon" clause for your sanity.

I love dunsparce. A great annoyer, and one of the few pokemon with serene grace. If only it didn't have such abysmal stats...
But yeah, paraflinch and king's rock. If you're running an in-game team, attract comes in handy suprisingly often.
