This is pretty interesting, a Jesuit being made Pope

Apparently, those guys aren't all that popular (I've heard)
Having been to a Jesuit high school i have nothing against them. The thing is that Jesuits have a tendency to speak their mind to the great disappointment of people who don't like to be contradicted. And they're also very stubborn in their own ways.

His parents were Italian immigrants. Argentina was almost as big destination for immigration as the US, that was before Peronism wrecked the economy. Even Peron's family was from Sardinian.
Since I know next to nothing about the guy, I was looking at his name, then 'Argentina' seemed a bit weird, since his entire name (except maybe 'Jorge'... 'Giorgio'?? *shrug*) is Italian. And huh... thanks for the factoid...

And since they're Italian (after a fashion), can they lay off the Falklands now?! ¬_¬
That won't happen as long as there's oil to be had. To be honest I'm wondering if the best solution is to work out a compromise in relation to the oil. Especially if the revenue could be used to help develop Latin America and benefit Mercosul as a whole.

The problem is that the negotiations would have to include the government of the Falkland Islands (which is pretty much autonomous), which the Argentinian's persistantly refuse to acknowledge and therefore do not believe that they are legitimate party in negotiation. Basically, if the Argentine's want any of the oil, they need to talk to the Falkland Islanders, which means acknowledging them as being a British Overseas Territory, which won't go down well. Argentina has basically screwed itself

On Topic: Is it just me or does the new Pope look like Alec Guiness?

Why do they change their name? They should have just named him Keith.

Also, what's with the bet fair captcha? I bet Betfair are hoping if we type "bet on cheltenham at betfair" enough times we will bet on it.

I saw a news report on this it was SO FUNNY.

The correspondent said this and I quote. "We have to find a candidate that hasn't been tainted by the child sex abuse crisis" My sides hurt.
Hahaha, oh man that's great. Nice to know the Church has their priorities established.

OT: Surprised a Jesuit became Pope today, but I'll take that as good news. They seem to be more open-minded than most Catholic orders, at least based on my own personal experiences with the Church.

They're only unpopular in certain protestant circles because they're believed to be "The Assassins and Inquisitors of the Church".

In truth they're a religious order that is disciplined about as well as a military, they promote education and schools along with a great deal of missionary work. Hell, half of the reason Europe began to trade with Asia and explore the world is because of Jesuit missionaries.
Yep, aside from the whole Catholic indoctrination thing, Jesuit schools are highly regarded as far as educational attainment goes.

OT: So, he's an Argie is he? Well as long as he stays away from the tiresome issue of the Falklands then I suppose thats fair enough. But then it doesnt take much to beat his ex-Hitlerjugend predecessor...

I hope this guy makes better use of the papal twitter account. The other guy was fucking mundane.

Also, Francis looks a lot like Jim Bowen.

This happened far faster then I expected. Now I have to wait until December to go around staring at chimneys again.

Interestingly, it's still unclear whether he will be known as "Pope Francis" or "Pope Francis I", both styles have been used in the past for popes with a unique papal name and even Vatican sources seem to contradict themselves at this point. External sources aren't doing much better either, Wikipedia is leaning towards the former whilst BBC news is sticking strongly to the latter.

What will they call this new pope?

The Church may never know...

Which is pretty silly, but it's a name; no harm done (until Francis II shows up...)

According to CNN a Vatican spokesmen has confirmed it's just "Pope Francis" and the BBC switched their headlines over to that format in the last few minutes so it looks like it's that rather than the First.

In truth they're a religious order that is disciplined about as well as a military, they promote education and schools along with a great deal of missionary work. Hell, half of the reason Europe began to trade with Asia and explore the world is because of Jesuit missionaries.

EDIT: The reason they were so successful as missionaries was apparently because they would mostly assimilate into the culture they were preaching too. They were great linguists, learning the ins and outs of chinese culture, mastering the tea ceremony, and wearing chinese garb. Overall, they're a very great order.
One of the founding beliefs of the Jesuits is a universal, direct and absolute Papal monarchy. In the late 18th century
the Jesuits attempted to set up areas of direct Jesuit control in parts of the Catholic powers overseas empires. This lead to the Jesuits suppression by the French, Portuguese and Spanish governments in all their territories. The powers also pressured the Pope into disbanding the order and ironically they found refuge in protestant Prussia. Eventually a successor Pope reversed the decision and post Napoleon the world had changed so much that Jesuits no longer looked that important. However in official Catholic circles they have been continued to be viewed with suspicion.

When Frances hands over 1/2 of the mineral rights from Alsace Lorraine to Germany perhaps we might consider it then.

Oh dear lord, I can't unsee it. In fact, I'm just imagining it now...

"Oh, I'm afraid that prayer to save your child didn't work Sister Mary. Now let's have a look at what you could've won"

And then they bring out a speedboat.

In fact, not only that he is definitely George Bluth Sr from Arrested Development.

What with the recent scandal and all, he might have to be very wary of the No Touching rule.

Um, two things aren't comparable. Germany don't need the resources nor are they claiming them and Alsace and Lorraine were French before they were ever German. But even then the history of the region is complicated, as is the history of European division in general. Also I'm half British so I'm not sure what point you're trying to prove to me here.
